The discovery of new species — or unexpected cross-breeding — in nature is always fascinating. Not too long ago, it seems that an expedition into southeast Asia (in or near Vietnam, I think) uncovered a new species of goat or something.

I'm betting it is a new species of chimp.

I think the question we all want to ask is when they first realized this might be a new species, did the scientists go ape or banana?

I think the very idea of Gorillas and Chimps directly crossbreeding questions the seriosity of the article. Come on, the other examples of crossbreeding given in the article were between "java Urang-Utan" and "Sumatra Orang-Utan" and that sounds plausible. I'm no expert, but Gorillas and Chimps are too far from each other to crossbreed into a new species IMO.

No one knows if they can hybridize or not. Don't make assumptions, they have a tendency to come back to shoot you in the foot. Humans and Chimps probably can't hybridize because they have diferent chromosome numbers. Non-human great apes all have 48, we have 46. Even though chimps are more closely related to us than gorillas, gorillas and chimps have the some number of chromosomes.

I'll bet Werns right thou, it won't turn out to be a Chimp/Gorilla hybrid

After all that Gorillas and Chimps are of different species (Gorilla spec. vs. Pan spec.) points out, that there never has been observed, that a Gorilla mates a Chimp (or vice versa) and this connections produces living Offspring.

Shouldn´t mean that it is impossible, sometimes Species just live in different Habitats and therefore are unable to mix, for example two different kind of Seagulls, which are considered different Species, because they live in Different Habitats, separated from each other by geographical Barriers and have developed a somewhat different appearance, but who could produce living Offspring if they were not separated by those Barriers and would live in the same Habitate.
And tthere is the Example of interbreeding between Horses and Donkeys, which produces Mules, but those are sterile and therefore could never survive as a separate Species.

So, I´d think it is somewhat improbable that there was interbreeding between Gorillas ancd Chimps, but wouldn´t totally dismiss it.

How the world can a chimpanzees/ape hybrid be both bigger than an ape and taller than an ape? The hypothesis doesn't make sense. The walking upright bit is the only indication of the chimpanzee ancestry. However, the size of the animal is way inconsistent.

if apes for 48 and we got 46 how does that preclude mating? how do you explain mules then if horses and donkeys got different chromosone numbers too?

but anyway its always weird how new species are found... you can understand some little bird in the middle of the amazon or some kind of deep sea animal but a land ape? shouldnt that honestly have been noticed decades if not centuries ago?
