I used to play a lot, one tip is try not to pot you ropponents ball, its not respotted, so when it goes down you are left with only two balls to score with which is a big dissadvantage

also if you can't score yourself leave the balls as spaced out as possible, with you oppenents ball pref. on a cushion

    edit Opps!

Hard to discribe in words :O)

If you hit the cue ball on the top and follow through with your cue, the ball will follow through after hitting the object ball. If you hit the cue ball (say) top AND left it will follow through but to the left hand side (same with right and bottom (bottom is tricy thou)).

Use the cushions, if theres no angle for a cannon look to see whether you can come off a cushion to hit your second ball.

But the main thing is practise hitting the cue ball off centre and see what happens, even against a cushion you'd be surprised how much spin is on the ball

BTW Use plenty of chalk!!!!! ;O)

it's not a game you get good at quickly (I've played for 10 years and I'm average at best) the best bet is to play and just try and pick up the angles/ how to hit the ball as you go along

thats what i have been doing, its kinda frustratring sometimes though, like you here of pro billiards players from decades ago scoring breaks of over 500, anf I get 4 if i am lucky

did you play at a snooker hall or a proper billiards place?

I used to play in a snooker hall where you had to pay for the light above the table by the hour, so one game of snooker would take 40 mins or so, so you had minutes 'left in' the light but not enough for another game of snooker. We'd play Billiards for the last 20 or so until the light went out. Got to be a bit of a ritual ;O)

when i was a kid and had a (small) snooker table, my grandad used to say how he could only play billiards... i was to young to realise

And I heard bits here and there also, and eventually just tried it out.

I noticed how its dying out also, trying to find info on the net is immpossible, i was lucky to find a website with some decent rules on it.

who knows though, maybe all these youngster today will realise, though i dare say they havn't the patience for it

I Googled the rules, and most are different to what we play,we played cannons were worth different amounts depending on which ball was hit first and the same with 'in offs'

One site even started with 'rack the balls up in a triangle'!!!

What's the difference between billiards and pool? Colour of the baize? Or does it go deeper than that?

the table is a standard snooker table, with only the white, yellow and one! red on it.
The white is used as one players cue ball and the yellow as the other players cue ball.

Other than that it exactly like pool!only totally different

Well the balls are still round I suppose, but thats about it

is the place with a list of decent rules on it. for more then just billiards to.

the 'rtack the balls' thing is probably cos american pool is called pocket billiards for some reason
