  • Hurricane Names Aren't Black Enough

Yes, a US Congresswoman is demanding that the current batch of names for hurricanes have "black" names added to it.

The congressional newspaper the Hill reported this week that Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, feels that the current names are too "lily white," and is seeking to have better representation for names reflecting African-Americans and other ethnic groups.

"All racial groups should be represented," Lee said, according to the Hill. She hoped federal weather officials "would try to be inclusive of African-American names."

A sampling of popular names that could be used include Keisha, Jamal and Deshawn, according to the paper.

This is like something out of the Onion. However, I look forward to eventually reading about Hurricane Shaniquahsialkisha, Hurricane Sambo, and Hurricane Spike, America's first Hurricane for Men (OHNO LAWSUIT).

Great, let's also decide that 12% of all clouds have to be black from now on. Most clouds have been too lily white too long now.

And if he weren't dead already, Bing Crosby should be taken outside and shot for hitting with White Christmas. Man, he must have been pure evil.

It's also come to my attention that most hurricane names aren't French enough. But you don't hear anyone in the States whinging about the non-existence of Hurricane Gaston.

How about Hurricane Mao? Hurricane Stalin? Hurrican Guevera?

Communists should be represented, too! :dotinow!:

They should construct hurricane names from a database of syllables. All they need is a text file with different syllables in it and a random number generator.

Aren't hurricanes supposed to be bad things?

All of this would actually mean something in the US except for the fact that the names for the hurricanes are set by an international body and not be the US government. That body represents all of America (North, Central and South) were the hurricanes are found.

To get whatever names you want on the list, simply submit them for consideration. It isn't a racial issue and it isn't a US issue.

I think that there was some tropical storm or hurricane or whatever and whoever is responsible for naming it called it "Israel". The Israeli Foreign Ministry, worried with the already low Israeli reputation in the world, imagined newspaper headlines like "Israel kills 15, destroys 20 homes" and made lots of fuss until the name was changed.

Now that I think about it... It might've been a joke.
