  • Condolences on the attack and the money lost. if you feel unsafe, it might be wise to put most of your cash out of the way, like inside your shoes.

As you described the incident, it seems very unlikely having had a gun would have helped, since the second assailant came out of nowhere: how would you have been ready for that?

But anyway, hope this is the lasdt time it ever happens, and that the perpetrators are caught, as small as that chance is.

    • Would any kind soul who is familiar with that particular state's laws please advise Master Speer on the legal implications of carrying a concealed firearm?

D'oh! No one'd even thought of that, and it's probably the easiest solution so far.

        • a couple years ago my mom was mugged and pistol whipped but nothing has happened again for her so far... i hope nothing will happen to me again... i mean i never thought it would in the first place though... i'm a young male whose lived his whole life in the city and is from the area... arent i like the least likely target statistically?

damn it though... i was thinking about getting a gun for a while though just in case... i always get these thoughts right before something happens bad to me like my subconscious knows whats up

          • I though young males are most likely to get into any sort of trouble, both as the victims and perpetrators.

They'll get it sooner or later. Not only are they doing drugs, but they're mugging people to support their habit. A double whammy if you ask me.

Albert--if they're going to attack someone, they're going to just attack the person who looks the least prepared. They don't give a **** if you're a "homie", they just want their weed.

no but young males living in the area of a crime are the least likely i'm sure to be the victim of random violence like this one... what you're thinking is where boys bring it on themselves...

but damn... weed... don't tell me that **** aint addictive if it could drive these two to that

Most of the time I hear about people killed by random violence, the majority are minority young males..much more than any other category..kids, usually minority, are next. I hear of very few older adults getting hurt or killed by random street violence. After all, how much money will some little old lady have on her?

                      • Know what you mean. Mugged at gunpoint myself. I had mug money in my pocket, though, which is a very good practice. They only made off with a $20 and didn't hit me or anything. The guys who mugged me couldn't have been older than 16. Like you, I couldn't get a good description, even though I think I got a good look at them. Mugging just addles your brain sometimes, I guess.

As for firearms, personally I have taken different approaches (mug money, moving out of bad neighborhoods when I was able to afford it, etc.) and have been successful so far in not losing anything of real value to me.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                          • The thing Speer is, that even if you are broke now, you won;t be after a few weeks of working..but getting badly hurt will cost a hell of a lot (even with medical insurance), and getting killed is permanent. IN the grand shceme of things, doing anything that might increase the posibility that next time (if unfortunitelly there is a next time) you might be seriously hurt or fataly injured really needs to be exmained very, very closely.

So if you decide to get a gun, make sure everything is legal, and that you have extensive training in how to use it, and when to use it.

It might be worthwile to go to a local precint and talk to some cops about the idea.

                            • with that mugging money thing... i actually do that but only when i got a huge amount of money... when i got over 200 on me, i put most of it in my shoe... i shouldve done that this time but i dont know. i had used the atm recently and was planning to go buy something which i cant seem to remember now what it was...

maybe you're right, gepap... maybe i dont need a gun... i was talking about a gun recently with someone who had just done a gig in kensignton and he said how he was packing there and i said i dont really know if you need a gun like that but he said he thought he did and i began to think maybe i do but i dont know... a couple hundred is a bit of money and i'm too broke now to spend much more money but a gun might be real handy one day soon. i'll have to sleep on it and ask some people what they think.
