Oh come on... He's a great Strauss conductor and his Prokofiev isn't bad either.
Great? No. Great conductors don't have such mushy inner voices. Karajan is superficial--he's very treble and bass, but you lose the inner workings. That's why his Beethoven and Brahms are particularly abhorrent, since any counterpoint will become a mess in his hands. He then goes to ridiculous lengths to be precise with rhythm and notes, but loses the texture and balance of the instruments. And when he's slow, he's sloooooooow.

Karajan lacked nuance, ingenuity and most of all real passion. I've rarely heard anything as shockingly uninspired coming from the magnificent orchestras he conducted.

yeah right... I've been working on this list for years. I've actually had to choose among my stuff before - some terrible decisions had to be made.

Oh come on. You sound like the anti Richard Osbourne. Thankfully, this opinion is not universal.

I don't think his Metamorphosen can be beat.

I can't believe you don't have Quadrophenia on your list, Imran.

It's probably because I haven't heard it yet

          (I know, I know ).
