  • Decorate My Room...

In about six weeks I move into "Pentre Jane Morgan"/PJM/Student Village in Aberystwyth with four other people.

So far I have about four posters for the walls. I've spotted a cool light kind of thing I want to get. It's like one of those fibre optics things with all different colours, but rotates like a fan. I think it will provide an interesting lighting thing.

The room won't be too big, and it will have to have my computer in there (not that I use it for anything other than mp3s, porn and the internet..).

What can I do that won't permanently change the set, but will provide an interesting look and feel to it?

An interesting thing to do is to get one of those desk top water fall type fountains then make the water glow in the dark. It sounds weird but the effect is actually kind of cool and it makes a nice conversation piece. All you have to do is get a black light ($10 at the home depot) and a highlighter pen ($2 any stationary store) and then pop open the back of the pen and let the ink pad sit in the water. Once the water has some of the highlighter ink in it just put the black light over it and you will have a water fall which glows in the dark.

Fish tanks are also cool and don't underestimate how cool home made art can be. One of my old roommates painted designs onto ceramic tiles and then hung them off of the walls and they actually looked pretty good. Real paintings can cost a fortune and pictures cut out of magazines looks cheesy so home made art might be the ticket. Besides when girls come over they can marvel at how artistic you are.

Also think about going to thrift shops as they often have some cool stuff dirt cheap. You have to sort through a lot of junk to find the gems but they are out there and even a student can afford them. If you have a camera then making large prints of your best pictures also works.

The girls will be impressed if you hang a riding crop above the bed.

Also, a very visible security-camera in the top corner of your room.

Why would I want to do that?

                Dorm rule no.1: Dorms suck.

seriously, though, the dorms I've been in look like ****, and smell like that as well. Those are the oldest buildings around my uni, though, there are some newer ones, that can be better.

My uni had great dorms. Built in kitchen, living room, double bath, four bedrooms, fully furnished, and less then a block from the beach.

Of course the no drinking rule sucked and I much prefered having my own apartment but it was fun for a year.

They're not really dorms..just like ordinary bedrooms. Renting a house like the one I'm in next year would cost you £5000 month in London.

That would be around $7000 per month! Damn, I always thought California was expensive...

Did you mean £500 or is that hyperbole?

How much would it cost to rent a 5 bedroomed detached house in the centre of London?
