I think they can (and do) refuse to acknowledge gay marriage or union for all federal purposes (like family benefits for fed employees), although that could be discriminating...

But voiding state marriage laws? Well, maybe it's just been sloppy phrasing.
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)

I think when people get a ceremony by anything other than a priets/minister/etc it should be called a civil union- no matter what their sexuality is.

I don't think 2 drunk people who fly to vegas to get married should have the same classification as 2 people who spend thousands on a religious ceremony.
Uh, Diss? I agree with you, but let's be clear: it's not the religious ceremony that costs money; it's renting the reception hall at La Bella Casa Grande Of Milwaukee, hiring the Take My Cherry! -- The Wild Cherry Tribute Band to play "You Sexy Thing" for the first dance, and feeding rubber chicken to all those people your parents made you invite. To say nothing of the goddam dress.

EDIT: I am ethically bound to acknowledge that I have confused disco-era one-hit-wonders Wild Cherry with disco-era one-hit-wonders Hot Chocolate. If I were Japanese, I would now have to kill myself.

You should be glad you aren´t.

Uh, why should the cost of it have any effect on what its called or its legitimacy?

How about poor people who can't afford a big fancy wedding and just have to go to the justice of the peace instead? Seems remarkably elitist to have a financial threshold for determining "marriage."

I am ethically bound to advise you that ronin hired by the Errol Brown Defenders of the Faith are hunting you to turn you into Firefly Teriyaki.

Hot Chocolate enjoyed a string of hits including Emma, Everyone's A Winner, So You Win Again, It Started With A Kiss, Love is Life, You Sexy Thing, Heaven is the Back Seat of My Cadillac, Girl Crazy, et cetera.

                I hate to say this

but we vote fort he politician

and for many people, religion is a part of whothey are (on both sides of the isle)

I know that this is true with me (and I think it is true with lieberman too)

                • my stance:
                  gay 'marriage'
gay civil union (legally identical to marriage in terms of legitimacy, legality, and taxes)
Why? Relegating "civil unions" to gay people is nothing less than state declaration of the inferiority of their relationships. I can't possibly see how this could be justified.

                    • The message the idea of civil unions says is that gay people and their deviant practices aren't good enough for the pure tradition of marriage. It's totally denigrating.

                      • marriage has always been defined as union between a man and woman. Everyone has the right to marry someone of opposite sex. I think the best way to let gay people have what they want is to come up something like a civil union. That way everyone is happy. What is wrong with that?

                          • Let's say that I'm in 1960 and I say that interracial marriages should stay prohibited because it has been that way for a long time in Texas. Is there nothing wrong with this assertion?

I and many people like me think that it is morally wrong for anyone to have sex outside marriage and that it should only be between a man and woman. But I dont go forcing others to accept this view. Everyone should have equal rights and if gays really want marriage, I think that civil unions are the best way to go. HOw does civil unions make you feel inferior? Why must gays feel the need that everyone accept their way of life?

Racism is illigal. I am just trying to reach a compromise. Many people view marriage between a man and woman and think that men marrying each other is wrong. But gays want to marry each other. So it make everyone happy give gays civil unions.
