          albert:

          Compaq Presario 2254
          266 mhz pentium II processor
64 mb ram (upgrade from original 32 mb)
          2 mb video card
3.73 gb hard disk (without that pre-installed software)

would you believe that's almost identical to the original specs of the packard bell that i'm blowing out, upgrading, and linuxing now to serve as a third computer at home (internet connection sharing/word processing/internet terminal)?

          the original specs were:
          pII/266
          64mb sdram
          2mb video card
          6gb/5400rpm hd.

i've changed it now to be:
          celeron 533
          192mb sdram
          same video card
          2.4gb/7200rpm hd.

My comp still needs an upgrade.. I never got around to upgrading it...

            AMD XP 1600+ (1.4GHz)
Gigabyte KT-266A Board GAXTH+ (or some model like that)
            1GB of PC2100 DDR-RAM (Samsung)
            40GB Maxtor UATA/133 Hard-drive (7200RPM)
            Soundblaster Audigy PCI Card
            Integrated Ethernet
            64MB Gainward Geforce2 TI450 AGP video card
17" Korea Data Systems Monitor Xtreme Flat
New! ATI TV Wonder VE Tuner Card
Windows 2000 Professional and SuSE Linux 8.0

Actually the machine hasn't had any major crash in nearly a year. It has been pretty stable with a restart every few weeks.

Also it has eight 80MM fans so it sounds like a jet engine. Nice case aluminum case. The only thing I have done a major upgrade on. When AMD's prices come down further I will upgrade the CPU and MB.

I just bought a TV Tuner card... by the way...

                      Laptop:
IBM A30 (This is a beauty.)

Just a small point: I have recently reformated my WD drive to 32kb cluster NTFS from FAT32. I have noticed a huge burst in drive speed. For example, MS Word now loads and is ready in just one second.

In contrast, I use my Seagate drive as a bit bucket with everything on it compressed. It operates a lot slower as a result. (However, the Seagate drive is quiet. Very quiet.)

The processor is beginning to show its age because I have some FPS problems with games like Vietcong and Unreal II. But overall, a very good system able to handle virtually everything.

Does anyone still have/use a floppy btw, seeing no-one mentiones them.

I still have one, but not in my PC (anything to reduce heat and a good airflow. Now if only could get rid of ****** IDE cable )
