I don't even know what to say about this... I mean, they were trying to rescue a woman from terrorists... so I really can't get very upset about that...

but they violated Brazilian sovereignty in trying... I don't know whether to be thrilled our boys caught them, or dismayed that she wasn't saved...

It appears that everyone here, from the FARC and the Colombians to the French and the Brazilians, suffered from a severe lack of communication (in other words: to a degree, they may all be a bunch of liars).

Do you guys remember that scene in Saving Private Ryan where they wouldn't tell that new guy what FUBAR meant?

Why didn't they simply carry out some secret talks with Brazil and Columbia to get her out. I can't imagine they would say no to a rescue mission from terrorists. Or would they?

French should of consulted at least Colombia.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Hmmm... Mirriam Webster has snafu, but not fubar.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Does the dictionary spell out what snafu stands for?
