  • Captain Planet and other 90s eco-cartoons

Remember ol' Captain? I don't remember the show that well, since I only saw few episodes, but I remember that it was kinda crappily animated and one othe kids had the power of the heart (huh?). Oh, and the villains polluted for the sake of pollution.

Also, there was the Bamboo Bears, though I'm not sure whether they showed it in the States. Basically, it was pretty similar to Captain Planet, except the main characters were some kind of animals (one of them was a big fat panda, and then there were two smaller animals), they travelled around with a magical dragon, and the villains were a bunch of rats. But the basic scheme was same, the villains polluted (usually to the detriment of the local animals) and the heroes thwarted their schemes. It was pretty self-repeating, but I saw all the episodes. (Hey, I was a kid - what can you do?)

Were there other junior brainwashing attempts anyone can remember in the 90s?

Oh yeah, and the theme song. Can't forget the theme song. (Literally, can't forget it - evil stick-in-your-head tune that it was)

      Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero

                The power is yours!

Seriously, was that cartoon made in Russia? It had kids from all the continents of Earth: North America, Asia, South America, Africa and... the Soviet Union. The American kid was a ginger moron, always being outsmarted by the attractive Soviet chick, and most of the bad guys were Westerners.

And why didn't they sell the design specs for their 'geo-cruiser'? That would have solved a heck of a lot of pollution. And what sort of evil mastermind travels back in time in order to turn the Grand Canyon into a giant landfill?

It was Ted Turner's brainchild, actually.

Ah right. That philanthropist guy. Nice try Ted, but it was a dumb show, even for a children's cartoon with the same 'power-up' sequence every episode.

I think the Cartoon Network still shows Captain Planet episodes during the wee hours of some days of the week.

You'd be surprised at what's on the air at 4 in the morning.
