  • You know what I don't get about Star Destroyers?

    1. Why put the bridge in a vulnerable spot.
    2. Why not carry more fighters? It's a big ship, but seems like most of it is not ship storage and such.
    3. If those two big shield generators generate powerful shields, why not put like 50 of them on the ship?
    4. If you can put a hyperdrive on a small ship, can't you put a hyperdrive on a proton torpedo or concussion missile and shoot it at another vessel?

I would think a torpedo hitting another ship at lightspeed would do more damage.
To us, it is the BEAST.

      • I would move my stardestroyer in geosynchoris orbit over Paris about 500 feet over the tallest building there... Wait, would the stardestroyer cover the whole city? Is it that big?

Any way, I'd move it over a good portion of it at least. That way I would block out the sun. I wouldn't move, but sell tickets to people in other countries to come on board my giant floating Casino!

I would rig all the toilets to exit the bottom of the Casino.

I would also paint the space craft to resemble the American flag.

I would take all the tech and offer it to the whole world to use, as long as they agreed that I was supreme ruler... except the schematics for the weapons, of course, that would go to the highest bidder

As this was going on I would build more droids, including battle droids.

When France finally has enough being sheited on I would move the whole thing over to Isreal, telling them I am supreme ruler stop squabeling or I will sick my droids on you.

When I have done all that I will let people charter the ship as a party liner to Mars... It will be fun

        Monkey!!!

I don't think it would be a good idea to take it in the atmosphere.

ISDs weren't designed to be close-range combat vessels, much like carriers are not. Note that carrier bridges are equally vulnerable. It just wasn't anticipated that such ships would ever have to worry about a threat getting that close.

              2. Why not carry more fighters? It's a big ship, but seems like most of it is not ship storage and such.
ISDs carry a huge complement of ground forces as well, including several thousand troops, AT-ATs, AT-STs, hovertanks, etc. They take up a lot of room. Plus the engine space alone occupies a huge percentage of the ship. The ISD carries plenty of fighters for most instances. They are also accompanied by escort carriers which supplement the fighters.

              3. If those two big shield generators generate powerful shields, why not put like 50 of them on the ship?
They aren't shield generators, they are sensor arrays. Blueprints of the ISDs from ANH label them clearly as such. The notion they are shield generators is a false interpretation of the events of the SSD's demise in RoTJ.

The SW comic books explored this notion, I believe.

              • I'd use the ISD to wipe out a very large number of bad people here on earth. Wipe them out I say...All of them......

Then I'd take my SD and leave this crazy planet and look for someplace where only nice people live. I don't like bad people. Exterminate them all.....and a ISD would do quite nicely at doing that. bwwahaahahahah

this contradicts their purpose in the xwing and tie fighter games, as well as ROTJ

It doesn't contradict RoTJ, as I said. That's a false interpretation of the sequence of events in the film.

The computer games are simply wrong. They also perpetuate the 8km fallacy, amongst loads of other errors. The games aren't canon, they are waaaaaay down the list in terms of accuracy. Keep in mind the filmakers aren't involved with making the games.

The company's name is LucasArts... but I suppose Lucas is far from the game making process...

Boris: You do realize you are arguing about a fantasy storyline... and technology that is equally as fantastic, right? Anyways, IMO, the ships aren't designed very practically, in terms of the types of battles in the movies.

And for RoTJ: I see a big dome thing get blown up, then a guy yell, "our bridge deflector shields are out"... it sounds like the Star-Wars techie geeks are the ones who are wrong.

Supposition correct. LucasArts is the publisher, anyway--the game designers are usually part of a separate programming company that has been hired to actually make the games. They aren't affiliated with Lucas.

Of course I realize it, but you're the one who started the "let's quibble about practicality" line. The ships aren't the most practical for the one battle in the movie, in RoTJ. Notice how everyone is surprised when Lando has the Rebel fleet engage the Imperials at point-blank range. The Imps never expected anyone to have the chutzpuh to engage a fleet of ISDs at that range. That wasn't their original design intention.

And for RoTJ: I see a big dome thing get blown up, then a guy yell, "our bridge deflector shields are out"... it sounds like the Star-Wars techie geeks are the ones who are wrong.
You're taking it out of context. Look at the whole sequence of events:

                          1) Akbar orders Rebel Fleet to concentrate firepower on the SSD
                          2) We see Rebel cruisers surrounding the SSD and barraging it with fire
                          3) A starfighter is able to destroy the globe with a missile.
                          4) Officer reports to Admiral Piett the shields are down, and Piett orders them to increase defensive fire around the bridge.
                          5) Out-of-control A-Wing smashes into bridge, causing loss of control for SSD. Caught in the Death Star's gravity, it plunges into the space station and explodes.

Now, No. 3 would not be possible if the SSD's shields were still operational. The globes would be as protected from fire by shields as any other part of the ship. How did the starfighter's missile get through? Answer--the shields were already down at that point.

The concentration of firepower from all the Rebel cruisers caused Executor's shields to drop. The destruction of the globe was a symptom of the loss of shields, not its cause. Note the officer doesn't say what caused the shield loss.

You'll note that the SSD had not just the two globes on the bridge tower, but multiple globes on the dorsal surface around it. If these were generators, one would have to assume the destruction of one wouldn't completely disrupt all of Executor's shields. Even in the computer games, you have to destroy both globes to drop the shields (and one missile won't destroy them, either).

Add to that the design of the globes, which look like radar globes here on earth, and the fact that Lucas positioned them in the same spot where one would fine such sensors on WW2 battleships, and I think the case is pretty clear they aren't shield generators.

                          • Well, regardless... whatever shield generators are, they don't seem that big (sorry I don't have the blueprints of the ISD's in front of me ), why can't they put like 50 of them in the ship?

Maybe Imperial economics are like things in the US, where the contracts go to the lowest bidders.
