Wow, I was going to ask about this author, as I haven't really read any fantasy outside of the Dragonlance stuff. Yet, on Saturday I picked up The Wizard's First Rule (book 1, sword of truth) and am, so far, enjoying it. I am glad to see some positive feedback.

Also, the communism bad, capitalism good thing will only make the book more enjoyable for me, as that is how I feel too... , I am only page 150ish, but can already see it...

Japher, I would also recommend "The Deaths Gate Cycle" which was written by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman (they wrote Dragonlance stuff). 7 books. Good stuff, even if there is some serious Deus Ex Machina toward the end (it's fantasy, who cares?).

            are you sure?

            Anyway.

Yeah, the only reason I got the book was because Borders didn't have the Foundation Series!!! I was subtly amused by that.

What is Deus Ex Machina ?

                Japher,

Yeah, the "Imperial Order" doesn't show up until later. They're the commies.

As for Deus Ex Machina (I hope I spelled it right), it means "God in the Machine." Simply put, if the writer sets up a situation where there is no way out - no way to win, and *poof* brings in something rather random to "fix" it...

Do you know your Tolkein? He uses the Eagles to save characters at critical times (Gandalf, Frodo & Sam).

I disagree, Milla. At least Goodkind has a point and eventually gets to it.

Jordan is ridiculous. He's the fantasy writer version of a spambot.

I rather liked the first 2 Wheel of Time books, it was just that by the end of the third (or at least 2/3 of the way through) I felt the story began to leg... from what I have been told from my friends who have forced themselves through all of it, it never got any better.

I just finished pillars of creation. It is an interesting read, and quite different from the others. get it and read it!!!
"Mal nommer les choses, c'est accroître le malheur du monde" - Camus (thanks Davout)

"I thought you must be dead ..." he said simply. "So did I for a while," said Ford, "and then I decided I was a lemon for a couple of weeks. A kept myself amused all that time jumping in and out of a gin and tonic."
