I wonder which of those two most people will go for
Unix-based OSes are becoming more and more mainstream and more and more easier to use everyday (just like Windows, only at a faster rate).

<--- Quote by Former U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt
"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Back then, computers themselves were not even mainstream. Hardly anyone owned one. At least until Windows 3.1 was released.

          no they're not

I have yet to see any improvements since Gnome and KDE were released

The only one that actually counts is MacOSX

(which was built by a for-profit company for consumers by the way)

Try Lindows (KDE). Try Ximian Desktop (Gnome). You might change your mind.

Compare the improvements in Linux and Windows for the last 5 years and you'll see what I mean. Or are you just too stuck up to admit it, just so you can support your point of view?

Don't give me that. Lots of websites do that.

If I'm comparing Windows 98 to Windows XP the difference is huge, and a vast improvement.

The X Server is a joke and compared to XP is unstable and very slow. I don't ever use the GUI on Linux because it's a complete waste of time.

Someone needs to rewrite X from scratch.

Only the BAD sites do that. How can I expect to take something seriously when they are trying to install spyware on my pc?

I see Windows and Unix as aimed at different markets - the Microsoft vision is every desktop/personal PC running Windows, and the Unix vision is portable code.

Neither of these visions bears too much resemblence to reality, although the Windows one is much closer to it. And I'm no great fan of MS.

                              I doubt any version of Unix in their present forms will top MS - but I've been very wrong about how computers will evolve, so I'm not going to go further than the last point;

OS's in 20 years or so will bear little if any resemblence to what is currently commercially available.
