  • My older brother needs to join civilization . . .

    by getting a damn microwave.

I visited, and stayed over night at his apartment last night, and sold him my old computer system at a cheapo price, and now I'm getting a new computer system.

But really -- my older brother has a cell phone, extended television cable, but he does not have a microwave?

I asked him where his microwave was when I decided to make myself oatmeal for the next morning for breakfast. Get this -- becuase he doesn't have one, I actually had to cook the oatmeal on this thing called a stove -- in this thing called a pot.

Ok -- I'm just exaggerating really, since I do cook my dinners using a stove.

But who do you know that lives without something that is just plain common in most homes? Someone you know who lives without . . . .

    touch-tone phone?
    cable television?
    or -- television, period?
or anything that I have not thought of?

He cares squat for nearly all PC games.
He's not a PC game freak like us Apolytoners.

I know somebody who doesn't have TV (Jesus freak). My parents don't have a touch-tone telephone. Its funny when on the automated headlines they shout "ONE" "EIGHT" and so on down the line, instead of forking out a tenner for a touch-tone

I consider the bare essentials of 'civilization' (within the context of this discussion) as:

          1) microwave oven
          2) PC/Mac
          3) and either cable TV, a VCR, or a DVD player. A TV is a given.

I hate talking on the telephone. Just hate it. No cell phone.
            No cable television.

              I don't have cable

And I don't use my microwave anymore

Microwave food is terrible and usually very unhealthy

You backward savage -- microwaves are excellent to pop popcorn with and quickly warm up a variety of other snacks.

Although you are right if we count meals -- make your meals with the stove and oven.

I don't think I know anyone my age who doesn't have a cell phone. My father says that if people really want to get him, they'll call back, so he doesn't need a cell phone

Though I provide the TV for the 4 of us who live in my college dorm appartment, I rarely if ever watch it myself. Heck, I can't really remember the last time I watched TV (except for a Bond movie over the July 4th break from work). Television to me is a largely obsolete form of entertainment.

I went ten years without buying a microwave, even though we had one at home and I used them at work. There were always more important things to spend my money on.

When I finally got one, it blew out the circuit breakers on my apartment.

So I have one, I just never use it.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Oh I just remembered, I haven't used, and am not missing, a microwave fort he last 3 years. But then I only eat pasta, pizza and take aways, so I am maybe not the best example

I am sitting four feet away from a TV. It works perfectly. It is the only one in my house. I live with two of my brothers and one sister. The TV has not been turned on in over a month.
