  • Does anyone know how to make animated gifs with the gimp?

I want to make an animated gif but I don't know how to do it with the gimp. I don't know how to do it with anything else for that matter.

You mean "The Gimp" from Pulp Fiction? Why do you want to animate him?

AFAIK, The Gimp doesn't make animated GIFs - neither does PhotoShop.

Generally, what you need is just a few GIF images, and a means to link them up. You could check Tucows or similar websites, or ask Stefu.

But then again Photoshop comes with ImageReady... so animating is no problem at all...

It is possible - I have done it! I don't have time to explain right now...

Ok, reinstalled the gimp (v1.2) and took a look. It seems somewhat straightforward.

For an example load a gif and them rightclick on the image and open Dialogs->"Layers, channels and paths". Each layer is then a frame in the animation. I don't think you can watch the animation from inside the gimp, but you can change it and save it.
In the layers dialog: note that just left of the image there are 2 fiels that can be toggled on/off. The eye indicates whether the frame if show in the image editor, and the cross indicates whether drawing will affect the frame. So you can view severel frames on top of each other, and draw on severel frames at the same time. You decide how long a frame will exist in the animation by editing the text name of teh frame, fx a frame named "framename (10 ms)" will be seen for 10ms.
There is some setting where you can choose if the frame will completely replace the previous one, or if it's pixels will be drawn on top. I don't remember where, but possible it is by adding something like "replace" to the name.

Note that because of the gif patents you might need to install gimp-nonfree (or something like that, I think that is the name in debian, too lazy to check) to be able to edit gifs.

                        I hope that helped .

Actually I am not involved in Freeciv development right now and hasn't been since I released 1.12.0. It took too much time and I got too involved. The only way to let go was to let go completely.

So I probably haven't got a better idea than you . But I do recommend the freeciv CVS, for the impatient who don't mind a little breakage. I like what I have seen of the SDL client in current CVS; I was hoping somebody would start a project like that.

Perhaps if I get the time I will code a little on moving the scenario editor into the client or polishing the SDL client. I do have sommer holiday .

Only at 5.5 and later, though.
