I'm getting strange popups. Never seen them before. I just left BellSouth DSL. Moved. And hooked up with Verizon DSL. Now I get these popups that say my computer is wide open (mention Microsoft Messanger) and want me to click ok. Well, I'm too smart for that so I close the window. They come every 2 minutes or so.

It looks that an adware has made its way to your computer.
Besides, don't worry too much about the ad detecting MSN : it comes with every WinXP, so it is only reasonable from the advertiser's perspective to assume the ordinary user will have some MSN running, even if he doesn't use it."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

I've read here recently that adaware is badly outdated. I can't give you the name of the more modern program that was named, but I think Ixnay could help you."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

It's not spyware, it's just a stupid default setting.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
select Messenger, right click and go to Properties, and disable it."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

I have no idea why it's enabled by default in XP, because all you need to do is type:
Code:net send (ipaddr) (message)
So yes, spiffor, MS did something very stupid. And it's not the first time."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

There have been a few newer versions of Ad-aware since then, and if run in tandem with Spybot S+D, you'll zap most of the little buggers in no time.
