A few years back the Swedes & Dans build a bridge from Sweden to Denmark which was/is an Engineering master piece. The Anglo-French Chunnel is a great example of modern leaders focusing the people's talents & energy onto achieve a centuries old dream. The Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate bridge were also Engineering marvels (if not as often dreamed about as a tunnel under the English Channel).

The UK could connect Britain and Ireland if they wanted to but it would take great effort. A tunnel would be easiest and cheapest but wouldn't it be amazing to create the world's greatest bridge to span the gap?

It would be a modern wonder of the world which people all over would talk about and which would be a world reknowed land mark as well as a major road way & rail connection. They could call it Union Bridge or something.

Its actually a crap example given how much debt the Channel Tunnel company is in. Still over $10 billion.

Grand projects are nice, but we certainly don't need cathedrals in the desert.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
