Interesting Slate article here about something that seemed to get ignored during the eulogies given yesterday.
How screwed up is the South to have a hypocritical racist serve for this long in Congress? The article disputes the idea that Strom ever reconciled his views. My favorite line from the article:
"The reason the South is the most interesting region in the country is that it's the only place where the psychic landscape is parceled out equally among Marx, Freud, and God. "
If the Civil War had ended differently with the South gaining sovereignity, right now us Yanks would probably be living next to a totalitarian regime similar to Iran. Only difference is it would be a theocracy based on Christianity instead of Islam.
