How did you try, in contorl panel, or did you download WMP9 from msft site, and try to install it on top? download windows media player (e.g. here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ad/default.asp)
and install it
or you might try windowsupdate.microsoft.com (if you XP) there is a (security)patch to WMP9 I think, maybe that helps
Also you can try and find mplayer2.exe in your "Program Files\Windows Media Player" folder.

Short answer: who knows?
Windows is a very large, very complicated, and not very well written system. Various components interact in odd ways to produce inexplicable behaviours. For example, this morning, a friend of mine installed the Space Cadet pinball game on his Wintel box. It worked mostly, except for the flippers, which wouldn't go down once flipped up. I use to flip around between WMP, WinAMP, QT32 and DiVX - nowadays I just don't watch porn.
