If you're looking to boost your metabolism, weightlifting is great too. I lost about 6 pounds of Labatts anchored around my mid-section by pumping iron alone.

True, but it also helps when you put it in perspective and, even better, *enjoy* doing it. Especially when walking, I use that time to meditate and commune, more or less, with my surroundings. There's a surprisingingly large number of wildlife near the trail, and the stream is full of fish, ducks and turtles. It's all very relaxing.

Don't get depressed (or quit) if you'll temporary gain few pounds, the most important challenge to most seems to keep up with their excercises regularly, if they don't see the results immediately.
Heh. I make a point of *not* weighing myself compulsively, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I usually only get weighed when in the doctor's office for my regular checkups.

One thing to keep in mind is this: You can cheat, and *should* cheat somewhat when it comes to stuff like that. Folks who try to stick to a given plan with absolutely *no* deviation are more likely to fail in the long run, and fail hard.

I've found that I can eat out three or four times a week so long as I get exercise every day and make sure to "budget" the days when I'm eating out. IOW, I eat less during meals before and after when eating out. That, plus exercise and overall improved metabolism, evens out for the "extra" stuff I take in when eating out.

Eventually I'd like to add weight-training to my repertoire. Right now I'm sticking mostly with walking and using my stationary bike, which is one of those models that works *both* your legs and arms for a complete cardiovascular workout. I also lift the occasional 5- and 10-pound arm weights.

            Jon Miller:

Heh. I took a bit of a break from the stationary bike during the week I had vacation *and* my 10-year class reunion, but kept on walking. So I'm not perfect, either, when it comes to maintaining a regimen, but do try. The old saying, "To be human is to err," applies here. (Or is it vice-vera? "To err is to be human.")

It's not that hard if you really have the right methods. Congrats!! Sounds like you did it the right way.

Eat healthy, but you can eat some heavy stuff too if you move a lot. Just remember to run, swim, bike and go to gym to work with the weights on daily basis. If you take it seriously enough, you can start getting that tom cruise upper body soon. Everyday for 2 hours is good, if you have the time. 1 hour should be minimum.. but you can take a day off every now adn then..

Then start going to shooting ranges and go with the 9 mm hand guns. Know them even with your eyes closed. Then learn your assault rifles. They're your babies. Treat them better than women and little babies. Get used to carry 60 pounds on your back, run and crawl with it.
Shave your head, no one likes hippies. Learn self defence, Krav Maga is recommended. Try to find someone who teaches you the military version, which is better. Go for the eyes, son!

Remember that you must be ready at all times, learn to control the space that you are in. Start hunting animals, so you can get some experience on camoflaguing yourself and shooting something living, that moves fast.
Learn how to prepare it. Master your combat knife. Ka-Bar knives are pretty good. Get yourself super fit.
Order every single magazine that has to do with military.
Contact people that have been in wars. Valuable information there. Ask for advices etc.

Watch lots of news, and possible heated situation. Travel there, country next to it, if it's safe and stable. Use someone elses name than yours. Bring your own clothes, knives and everything you need, except guns and ammo. Cross the border what seems to be the weakest spot. Speak english, and hope they don't understand too much. Just keep talking. Have a camera with you, and explain you're a photographer and you're here to cover the conflict. Don't express your political views under any circumtances. Have a fake press card too. Cross the border safely, and look for recruiters. Check out bars, but don't get yourself drunk. Young men knows aobut this stuff, they're good to ask. Make sure you give them the 'I'll kill you if you betray me'-look and act tough. Once you find the recruiters, you can drop the tough act, but don't look like a ***** either.

              And then, you're set!

              In da butt.

I think I'll just settle for some exercise and a proper eating lifestyle for now. But, hey, it never hurts to think long-term!

                    Ted Striker, et al.:

                    Thanks for the compliments.

I guess I was left with one question after the doctor called me one of his role model patients: Namely, why? All I've been doing is getting some sort of physical activity every day and eating healthier more often than I ever did prior to October 2002. It just makes me wonder that, if I'm a role model for doing seemingly so little, how little are some of his other patients doing to take control of their health?

I suppose a number of them just go on drugs and leave it at that, but I'm really leery of becoming dependent on any *outside* source for my health. Hence my attitude that if change is going to come, *I'm* going to be the one doing it, not some drugs.

Gatekeeper, no it doesn't hurt, and you never know if you get the urge to go. I suggest you buy those knives and some other accessories right away, so you're set and ready to go right away if you feel like it. Just to be sure.

The way today's American society is built, it takes an extraordinary amount of effort to live healthy. Living healthy just isn't "built-in" to our lifestyle. So you have to step outside of it and make the extra effort.

I think that's why so many fail.

I am glad to see that many schools are now banning soda machines in the cafeterias, for example. That's removing some of that "built-in" unhealthiness.

True. And it doesn't help any that most of the jobs nowadays are office jobs where folks generally don't have the opportunity to burn energy physically (although I understand that some of the non-physical jobs are *mentally* challenging, which forces the brain to use more energy — i.e., glucose — thus somewhat compensating for very little to no exercise).

Yep. Another step would be to reintroduce *mandatory* PE classes for all grade levels. Hell, I had a blast playing dodgeball during my PE days ...

very good knives Got my first one a few years ago... Ive put it thru hell and back and it has still kept its edge, tho a sharpening wouldnt hurt at this point...

same here! dodge ball was an awesome game. Fortunately my school system kept the mandatory PE/athletics classes thru 7th grade and put a moderate emphasis on sports, so many people stayed active beyond then.
I was shocked when I read it was not uncommon now for many elementary schools to only have PE 2 or 3 times a week! we went everyday, and had a nice long recess with all the cool jungle gym equipment, swings and monkey bars and stuff. A lot of schools now just spend recess in the classroom playing board games and puzzles and things
