I swore off on French bashing when they backed the occupation at the UN. My wife still calls our french poodle a freedle (i.e. freedom poodle), and I guess that one is going to stick.

Now can we start calling them "french fries" again?

Any UK poster tried the new Roast Lamb and Mint crisps yet?Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

I'll go to my supermarket today if I have the time (I'm spending the weekend in France) to see if there is anything like that, and I'll ask my mother about it if I remember. But don't hold your breath : I have never heard of "Idiot Cheese" anywhere else than on this board."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

We call the fries just french.
ranskalaiset = the french.
ranskalaiset = french fries.
The original ranskalaiset perunat = french potatoes is way too long so it's rarely used.
So we eat french here.
Somehow I got the feeling I'm not the first finn to tell this vital information, maybe first in this thread but...

I suppose it could be a take-off on American Cheese, but I didn't think that many in France would know what it is...No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Apparently, the French have recruited woody allen in a "charm campaign" to head off some of the anti-franch sentiment.
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/W..._campaign.html
May 30— In an effort to win back hearts in the United States, France has commissioned a little schtick from one of America's best-known comedians: Woody Allen."I don't want to freedom kiss my wife," says Allen says in a new ad spot. "I want to French kiss her.""Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movements and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us." --MLK Jr.
