Well, I can't see too well from afar, and as such I highly recommand the 1024*768 resolution. I can't bear having to close up to my screen to precisely read what is going on : bad for your eyes and uncomfortable position.

I use the 1024 on every screen I have, from 14" to 19". It's great to work 80cm away from the screen while being able to read everything

TFTs are not bad for your eyes. It is much more comfortable to look into the cristalsharp display of a notebook than the blurry thing of a cheap desktop CRT.

And yes higher resolutions require of course greater display sizes.
The nbook of my gf has 15" and 1400x1050. Thats okay!
I would be satisfied with 1280x1024 though.
If you have lots of windows and stuff 1024x768 is just too little.

      I do programming, photoshoping,....
