"You have reached the pinnacle of success as soon as you become uninterested in money, compliments, or publicity." - Thomas Wolfe

'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"
    G'Kar - from Babylon 5 episode "Z'ha'dum"

So dead people are successful huh?
Some cry `Allah O Akbar` in the street. And some carry Allah in their heart.
"The CIA does nothing, says nothing, allows nothing, unless its own interests are served. They are the biggest assembly of liars and theives this country ever put under one roof and they are an abomination" Deputy COS (Intel) US Army 1981-84

I think the quote assumes the person is alive.

        What if you're wrong?

Anyway, what's so great about the pinnacle of success? Once you are there it's all down hill anyway.

          Sounds like a nursing home.
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

But isn't life about finding success or happiness? Isn't it the purpose of life?

If it is, most people have crap lives...

Maybe the pursuit is what life is about, not the actual gaining of success.

Anyway, even if was talking about living people, where does that leave the insane, coma cases and CJD sufferers? They're hardly celebrity material - well, maybe one or 2 celebrities fit in those cases but it's not like they're great interviw subjects on chat shows.

It would be nice to have some background on this guy to judge his words. Was he successful at anything?

Sorry to be lame, the name doesn't ring a bel.

Wolfe was a famous 20th century writer. Full bio here, http://library.uncwil.edu/wolfe/wolfe.html

The bum that lives behind the 7-11 is the most successful guy I know then! Wow!

Funny how some quotes on life actually have a lifespan, and some don't.

by the way, if you search for a tom wolfe, you'll hit two different people, both relatively famous authors.

thomas wolfe was earlier, and didn't write "the right stuff", "a man in full", or "the electric kool-aid acid test"
tom wolfe did. and tom wolfe wears white suits.

The quote is not saying that only the poor and the unknown are succesfull. It is saying that you can be successful without obsessing about money or popularity.

The person who is content with his job and his life will probably be happier than the person who obsesses about not making enough money or not getting invited to enough social events. That is what the quote is about, IMO.

Just look at the Hollywood celebrities. They have millions of dollars, live in amazing houses, and are worshipped by thousands of adoring fans, and yet many of them are absolutely miserable.

I agree in general principle with the quote. I doubt bums of the street are uninterested about money.

I agree that success has to do with contentment, and the bum gets by... I don't know, though, if success is contentment when happiness is... If I could be content with being a loser that does not make me a success, just a successful loser and a happy ignoramous...
