Maybe the pursuit is what life is about, not the actual gaining of success.
Anyway, even if was talking about living people, where does that leave the insane, coma cases and CJD sufferers? The person who is content with his job and his life will probably be happier than the person who obsesses about not making enough money or not getting invited to enough social events. That is what the quote is about, IMO.
