but he appears to be ignoring death. not exactly being friendly with it so it dont seem likely that Durer intended for them to be riding companions.
and if you look at other Durer drawings, he seems to portray religious militancy in the positive light, what with various pictures of sword-wielding angels fighting.
but i dont know. maybe you're right. and maybe Durer was vague (though still probably not as vague as some more recent artists) but that has no bearing on Michaelangelo and Durer's other, less abstract, contemporaries who are clear to understand.
