  • PA asks EU to blacklist Hamas

    from Haaretz:

    "Representatives of Palestinian Authority Prime
Minister Mahmoud Abbas recently made an urgent
request to the European Union that it blacklist
Hamas as a terror organization in order to put
additional pressure on the militant group to
accept a cease-fire with Israel, Israel Radio
    reported Tuesday citing Palestinian sources.

    Although the PA denied the
    report, EU sources confirmed
that such a request had been
    made. "

I wonder if the EU will follow through?

Let me guess. The fact that they have "blacklisted" the organization means that they are providing a small bit of thier funding, right?

Not that any of it would help, of course. I hate politicians so much...

The military wing of Hamas is on the lists (Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem), Hamas as a political organisation is not.

As for the reasons, good question....
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)

IIUC, UK has already called for blacklisting of political wing of Hamas - funding is fungible, etc. France has opposed. They say its cause the political wing is a player that should not be excluded from diplomacy - Some here think its just cause the French want to throw a monkey wrench (IE a deliberate obstacle) into US diplomacy in the region - a peace between Israel and the PA would benefit the US in a number of places, whereas continued violence is a difficulty to the "hyperpower". Now Im not saying I agreee with that, but with Abbas calling for the blacklist (even if not publicly) its hard to see how they can avoid changing position.
