  • Greek military defends the west against terror

    Excerpt from BBC:

An explosives-laden ship seized off Greece had documents linking it to a non-existent firm based in Sudan, say officials.
The Baltic Sky was carrying 680 tons of explosives when it was stormed by special forces off Greece's western coast on Sunday.

Greek Shipping Minister George Anomeritis says the ship's manifest showed that cargo was officially bound for a company with "a post office box in Khartoum that did not exist".

The cargo loaded in Tunisia was there in transit or was it manufactured in Tunisia or does it come from somewhere else?

Good questions DAVOUT. Nonetheless, a great effort by the Greeks!

The "Baltic Sky" (=name of the ship) sports a Comores Islands flag, its base is the Marshal Islands, and was headed for a company in Khartoum but which does not exist. Prior to entering Greece it had passed through Turkey and Albania.

The explosives, which are equivalant to that of an atomic bomb, had been loaded in Tunisia in 12 May 2003.

There is no information available as to where the explosives themselves were made.

680 tons. That sounds like a lot, I wonder what it means?

Equivalent to 680 tons TNT of modern high explosive?

680 tons of fertilizer bomb stuff?

or 680 tons of high explosives of unknown explosive power?

Either way that could have blown up an awful lot of ****. Close to 1 Kiloton, or a mirv nuclear warhead.

Imagine if they had just sailed right into London or New York (or in this case the Piraeus), and when the harbour patrol boarded them just plow right for shore and blown themselves up.

It's scary, that there is still enough terrorist doofs around to pull something like this off.
