Honestly, the finale to Act I is the best part of the opera. "Non piangi, Liu..."

My my, Michael- you've not been conned into listening to old, greedy men resurrecting styles everyone else has long since mercifully forgotten about in order to make money off gullible westerners with a superiority complex?

If you think that everyone else has forgotten about classical music, then YOU'RE the one who's gullible.

Greedy? Let's see...most classical music and opera venues are NON PROFIT. Can the same be said for rock and pop?

Classical music and opera are very popular, very loved and show no signs of waning in the public taste. The notion that it is elitist is crap, and is in fact an elitist notion in itself.

Let's see, whenever the Met or NY Phil gives their FREE concerts in Central Park in the summers, they are attended by over 100,000 people a pop. That would make a lot of snobs who go to sit in the grass and get eaten by mosquitos to do that. The great thing is that the audience is vastly, overwhelmingly young, including a lot of college students.

The "Westerners" comment is ludicrous as well. I'll tell you a few countries where classical music is insanely popular: Japan, China and South Korea. That Western enough? Japan has a huge classical market, and there's a reason that some of the best classical artists have emerged from East Asia, like Yo-Yo Ma and Sumi Jo.

Get over it. Your need to denegrate a musical style you don't like to justify your own tastes is silly. Making up **** about it is even worse. Get a clue what you are talking about before you start making such BAMs.

If you want German opera that's a lot different than that, check out Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio and The Magic Flute, Weber's Die Freischuetz and Beethoven's Fidelio.

i'll give it another shot. are there any specific recordings i should be looking out for?

Er. Hello. I was addressing my comment to MtG, and it was about "traditional" indian and african music. Thanks for the rant though, always refreshing.

Why bother going to the opera? Wouldn't it be better to buy it on dvd?
