  • Some thoughts about opera.

So we went to see Samson Et Dalida in The Herodium ancient Theater (just underneath the Acropolis). The opera was done by a reknown french er, opera, but I don' recall their name.

    Thoughts.

Why the fook are the tickets so expensive? Are operas in the Herodium meant for rich people only? fook you.
(we had cheap tickets due to some connections we have)

Why the fook was that guy who had the tickets had his shorts in a twist cause we ALL were late half an hour? If you want punctuality go to fooking england.

My girlfriend looks mesmerizing bathed in the twilight.

get the subtitiles electonic screen BIGGER. We are blind people, we cant follow the opera's lines if the letters are so fooking small

So who were the bad guys? I say this absolutism isnt correct. fook the right and wrong. Cuase if the philistains were followers of pagan gods so what the fook, was that bad?

and dalida just went along and did it for her people.

samson was too fat and too old.

THABNK YOU MAESTRO YOU WERE ALWAYS FASHIONABLY LATE

    of course we cant talk

why were the maestro and the first violin always shaiking hands

great evening (a bit drunk )_

Costuming, set construction, rehearsals, etc. are all expensive as hell, for just a few performances. Typical opera production you've got 100-150 people employed. You don't begrudge people earning a living, do you, commie? Not to mention costs of overhead for tickets, venue, security, cleanup afterwards, etc.

Why the fook was that guy who had the tickets had his shorts in a twist cause we ALL were late half an hour? If you want punctuality go to fooking england.
At real opera (We're San Diego Opera supporters and season ticket holders, orchestral section ), they don't let your ass in if you're late. Why should everyone be disrupted by a few uncultured types who think it's ok to be late for opera? Or, why should the performers get ready, be all set to go on time, then wait around while the audience deigns to show up whenever they feel like?

get the subtitiles electonic screen BIGGER. We are blind people, we cant follow the opera's lines if the letters are so fooking small
If it was bigger, it would be more distracting. Having it there at all is a concession to those who don't know the operas.

So who were the bad guys? I say this absolutism isnt correct. fook the right and wrong. Cuase if the philistains were followers of pagan gods so what the fook, was that bad?
Well, the opera's an adaptation of the original story, so they don't change it much. If you have editorial issues with who the good guys and bad guys are in the original story, take it up with God when you meet Him.

and dalida just went along and did it for her people.
Yeah, but she was a conniving *****.

samson was too fat and too old.
There aren't that many young, buff and lean opera singers.

great evening (a bit drunk )_

The composer is Camille Saint-Saens, one of history's greatest musical disappointments.

              Thoughts.

Why the fook are the tickets so expensive? Are operas in the Herodium meant for rich people only? fook you.
(we had cheap tickets due to some connections we have)
Operas require a huge amount of resources to produce, from the cast of dozens to the orchestra of dozens to the stage hands of dozens to the conductor's large fee, the director's large fee, the stars' large fees, the set builders, scene designers, costume staff, make-up artists, wig and hair stylists, etc., etc. Government subsidies and donations cover a lot of these costs, but not all of it. Ticket prices are correspondingly high.

However, there are (at least in the U.S. and most of Europe) tons of smaller opera companies that put on good performances that cost much less to attend. In large urban centers, you can also usually find free public concerts and performances in the warmer months. The Metropolitan Opera puts on free concerts in Central Park in the summer that feature major stars.

Why the fook was that guy who had the tickets had his shorts in a twist cause we ALL were late half an hour? If you want punctuality go to fooking england.
Arriving late to a performance is very rude. It is inconsiderate of the other opera goers, who have to put up with you being guided into the theater via flashlight by an usher while the show is going on. Most opera companies won't seat latecomers until the end of the first act, which I applaud. Their failure to get to the show on time does not allow them to inconvenience others.

get the subtitiles electonic screen BIGGER. We are blind people, we cant follow the opera's lines if the letters are so fooking small
This is an ongoing struggle in opera, but progressives are easily winning. The old school opera lovers hate supertitles and think they are distracting and disrupt the performance. At the large venues, these folks have fought tooth and nail to keep them out, believing people should make the effort to study the libretto and story of the opera before coming to see it.

Fortunately, opera house managers are business-savvy and realize that the new generations of opera-goers are used to a more instant form of gratification and can't be arsed to read up on an opera before going. They also know that no supertitles= more bored audience members = less ticket sales.

So, the supertitles system has been installed in most houses. Likely, your theater kept the text small to minimize distracting those who object to them. Personally, I prefer the Metropolitan Opera's system, wherein each seat has a computer screen in front of it (in the back of the seat in front), and you can only see the screen in front of you, not your neighbor's. You can turn it off completely if you want. Naturally, this isn't an option in any but the biggest houses.

So who were the bad guys? I say this absolutism isnt correct. fook the right and wrong. Cuase if the philistains were followers of pagan gods so what the fook, was that bad?
You do realize this opera was written in 19th century Catholic France? It was the Biblical story, after all. The Bible would naturally display pagans as bad, wouldn't it?

samson was too fat and too old.
Opera singers generally aren't required to physically resemble their characters and are cast according to singing skill and talent. While this is changing someone, I would posit that it is far better to have an old, fat Samson who can sing the role than a young, slim one who can't.

THABNK YOU MAESTRO YOU WERE ALWAYS FASHIONABLY LATE
              Hmm?

              of course we cant talk
Of course...it would be pretty rude to talk during an opera.

why were the maestro and the first violin always shaiking hands
Tradition. The First Violinist is always the Concert Master who leads the orchestra's tuning and is the conductor's "Second in Command" for the orchestra.

great evening (a bit drunk )_
Glad you enjoyed it. Going to the opera can be a real blast, especially with a good group.

                Thanks for the information

The theater in question was made in B.C. times hence ancient, and is open, no err roof.

It's like the ancient Theaters you have in mind propably. You could see the Parthenon from there, just some meters on away and above you.
this thetaer supposedly has great acoustics.

BTW we weren't late for the opening of the show just late for that guy who had the tickets. The opera started well after we went in.

Also thanks about that explanation abut the first violein and the maestro shaking hands in the begginign of each act.

the maestro was late meaning, all the oerchestra was in place, then the first violen would come in, then the maestro.

I cant believe there's actually a rational behind having small electronic letters. I just thought it was bad planning from the operators of the theater.
which left me guessing most of the story, I knew it, but I couldnt keep my eyes in schisms so i could read each and every line.

and i thought the high price was to some cheap ass neo richness factor, since Herodium is one of the mot prestigious theaters. like paying for some rich brand which is the same crap as another one but just has the name.

i guess, opera expences would justify it but its still to high.

and most of these things are too high. theaters are relatively cheap but classical music concerts and ancient theaters (like herodium) take a bite off half your wallet.

which is a shame cause theyre soul motivating.

you cant tell me that has nothing to do with the musicians getting latrge sums of money

and commie or not shouldnt they be doing it for the ART MtG

AND thats the problem Boris. Ever since the megaron musikis was made, most of the old school operas and classica music halls closed... and whereas this IS one of the best modern music halls for classical music in europe, it HAS closed down many other and more affordable scenes and it usually is very very expensive. especially when orcheastras of some reputation come to play. and were not students anymore to get the half prices tickets

'There's your heavy opera, where basically people sing foreign and it goes like "Oh oh oh, I am dyin', oh, I am dyin', oh, oh, oh, that's what I'm doin'", and there's your light opera, where they sing in foreign and it basically goes "Beer! Beer! Beer! Beer! I like to drink lots of beer!", although sometimes they drink champagne instead. That's basically all of opera, reely."
