  • Meaning of the EU flag

What is the meaning of the EU flag?

The stars do NOT represent the individual member states, since officially the EU flag only has 12 stars, not 15 (nor 25 soon). 12 stars were also shown in pre EU days when the EC had less than 12 states.

Protestant wackos believe it represents the Virgin Mary (and with it, allegiance to the Catholic church), and/or it's a reference to Revelations 12:1 (or something like that). Of course, the EU is the New Roman Empire, ruled the anti-christ (Pope), and the evidence (apart from the supposed meaning of the flag) is that it's founding treaty is the Treaty of Rome, the absence of God in the draft Constitution, the rapid secularisation in European societies, and of course the Vatican (also in Rome) deciding to adopt the euro.

    Utter bullcrap of course.

But what exactly is the real meaning of the flag? I always believed each star repressented a single member nation, but that's not the case (12 stars, 15 members). Does someone have some information on this?

It's a reference to the 12 Tribes of Isreal, symbol of a strong union.

there was also another interpretation IIRC

The founding members of the Union in 1992/1993 were 12. Convenient as the symbol was taken from the Council of Europe, which had it also based on its 12 founding members back in the 1950s, IIRC.
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)

the 12 tribes of Israel? for real?

The founding members of the Union in 1992/1993 were 12.

I believe the EC also used the same flag before 1992, and before it had 12 members.

If they used it before, it wasn't official. But you're right, they adopted in 1986 already, but just as it were 12.

Because 12 is a symbol of perfection, and the old Council of Europe flag with its 12 stars has become a symbol for european integration.

Sounds fair enough, but I wish you had something to show the number of states currently in the empire.

                      I love Az's Idea.
Arabic numbers and their multiplication logic are much more rational than stars and their addition logic.

Do we want to end up with a cluttered flag like the Yanks ? No.
The Arabic number is extremely elegant, and will be convenient once the EU spans on the whole world (except Turkey )

vetlegion had once made a nice one on the same idea. It was red and inside, with futuristic letters, the word "Eurocoms".
