  • Co-Worker Attacked

    Another wild weekend in Korea.

My co-worker went to _____ by herself to get a phonecard and meet some friends.

She was at the phone booth, alone. Suddenly she turned around and found herself surrounded by a circle of 6 South Asian men, probably factory workers from Pakistan.

They wouldn't get out of her way and were making certain gestures and talking in a very loutish way.

So she tried to just walk through them. The 'alpha male' grabbed her by the hips and was grabbing her body.

Luckily, she has been studying Tae Kwon Do every night for the last year.

She says she reacted instantly, without thinking, stiffening her open hand into a V shape and shoving it right at the Adam's apple. Then she ran around the way to where people were. The other men were so surprised that they just stood there shocked.

So that's twice now, and she still refuses to stay at home until we can go escort her to different places.

And she was harassed by South Asian looking men at the bus stop last morning.

We know exactly why too, many of these young guys are from very redneck parts of pakistan and are culture shocked by all the Russian ho's, revealing clothing, drinking, porn, etc. They basically believe any white girl wearing a short skirt alone is 'asking for it'.

I don't want to condemn all the Pakistani foreign labourers in Korea though, I had a very interesting conversation with a well-spoken guy 2 months ago, about life there and here, why he came, how can he be Muslim in the land of drinking and sex, etc.

Anyway shes fine, she never tells her parents because her father would literally spend all his money to come and get her. He came for Christmas.

PS: oh, I witnessed a really sleazy fight. A really really big guy from some French West African country was getting money out of an ATM to pay a very impatient, shameless hooker. We were in a very crowded, sticky subway terminal at about 11:00PM. Any way a bunch of 'tough guy' factory workers with really bad orange dye jobs were waiting in line behind him and making comments and horsing around. So big dude was like"Back off. Now."

Well they didn't and a merry melee ensued in a packed underground tunnel full of drunk men speaking 6 or 7 different languages and all (the big guys friends where from Ghana)races. 'Luckily' it was in Itaewon so there are always a bunch of American MPs and their Korean counterparts (whose nightsticks are like kendo wooden swords, very long and heavy). Their solution was to yell loudly and start hitting people.

Very luckily I was with Australians from Brisbane and Ipswich, and they have brawl-sense. We wriggled out no worse for wear.

What's the law concerning carrying a concealed weapon ?

We're Foreigners. That means few rights in practice.

And Koreans don't seem to have private firearms.

Which is good. Nobody is going to pull a gun on you in seoul, not even off-duty soldiers. Even the MPs and riot police are only armed with clubs.

Your co-worker had the good sense to get educated.

Anyone who hasn't that sense and relies on a concealed weapon is up that creak when they don't have it and get into a situation.

Well, tell your co-worker that at least one of us is glad she's OK.

Well, cowboy, it takes time to draw a weapon. Do you think everyone would just stand around and wait?

While she has the gun pointed up the nostril, is she checking to see if any of the other guys there might be inclined to shove a knife into her?

As with JonhT, good to hear she was OK.
