PC gamer sometimes has interesting articles.

      Problems:

Flavour of the Month: Sometimes I've played a game and then read the review and I'm like did we play the same game ? It was crap, why such raves?

I do like it when the get some utter piece of crap that doesn't advertise with them then they can rip into it.

The 'build a gaming pc' articles occasionally seem to be trying to see how expensive you can make it (let's see you need the ____TM case, the _____TM power supply, and YOU GOTTA have the advanced super duper cooling fan, it's like a normal fan but DELUXE.)
      "Wait a minute..this isn''t FAUX dive, it's just a DIVE!"

I disagree. I always thought Warhammer RPG was very good, wheras I found the tabletop game dull.

Not that I didn't make changes to the RPG rules, but they were detailed and fast to play, a rare combination.

              * page 142 - The Civ3:GOTY demo bit. The grab is from me playing as Egypt against the Aztecs on Deity. Witness my l33t skills in the shrunken screenshot.

You did mention you did years of research before writing the article, right
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

                * page 15 - Middle Earth Online news item (in blue sidebar)
                * page 22 - Halo news item. Note that the spelling mistake in here isn't mine - the copy was originally a little long and when the editor re-phrased a sentence to make it shorter an error was made.
                * All of pages 138 and 139 - Vietcong, CMR 3 and The Hulk demos. Taking good screenshot of real-time games is much harder than you might imagine. CMR is a good laugh, as always, but The Hulk really sucks.
                * page 140 - The Star Trek Elite Force 2 bit. Yet another FPS game. Woohoo ... not.
                * page 141 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 bit - note the Avril Lavigne reference in the strap line.

                * page 143 - I wrote the whole of the "James' Games" challenge section. No, that isn't my picture. The regular Disk Editor left to work on the Warhammer Online website so I ghosted for him this month. Let me know if you can beat my time on the Colin McRae demo.
                That game costs $20 here

                  another bump for some self-promotion.

The August issue of UK PCGamer is out and contains my 2-page preview of Northland and my review of Next Generation Tennis 2003.

I actually get a couple of real bylines this time. w00t!

Northland is like Settlers, only a bit worse. It's not without good qualities, but I couldn't honestly recommend it to anybody based on my experience playing the preview copy.
I had to try and remain neutral in the preview, though - it's generally not a good idea to pre-empt the review too much.

NGT2003 is just a big sack of ****e, to be honest. I gave it 40% - the mini-games are a good laugh, but it's just a poorly executed and unoriginal game.

The work-experience guys don't exactly get the pick of the games to cover, as you can see, but I wasn't about to complain. It's not as if I could have stormed in there as a guy with no experience, and not even on the staff, and demanded to review Vice City and do an interview with Valve for a Half Life 2 preview.

                            I have no idea.

I expect going out and getting drunk with the Reviews Editor would be a step in the right direction, since he's the one who hands out the assignments. I tried that approach, but when you're only there for 2 weeks there's only so much you can achieve.
