  • Oerdin's getting a new place.

As many of you know I relocated to Sacramento a few months back and my employer offered me a bonus if I could move up their ASAP. As a result I didn't have alot of time to look around before I moved and I ended up signing a short term lease on the first place I ran across. Luckily, that lease is now up and I've had a chance to get to know the town better so it is now moving time again and I've found a nice little place.

I've rented a room in an old Victorian era house in the cities midtown/downtown area. The house is a beautifully maintained home built 1896 with five bedrooms, vaulted cielings, hard wood floors, wood engraving, and all of those nice Victorian touches which no one puts on houses any more. To wrap it all up it's on a 1 acres lot filled with hundred year old trees.

All that with a large room and a private balcany for only $425 per month. I think I struck gold. The place is also only 3.5 miles from my work so I can bike to work in the mornings instead of contributing to urban traffic & air pollution. I'm sharing the place with two other guys both of whom are slightly older then me but who seem very nice. Now I just have to convince them to split a cable modem with me and I'll be in heaven.

      Sounds good.

Ask them where the household porn stash is, too.

Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

It took me some time to adjust after moving from San Diego but now Sacramento is really growing on me. I like the rivers which go through town and one of my co-workers owns a power boat and he invites me when he takes it out.

Old Town Sac is pretty cool too with all of the gold rush era buildings and the fairy boat landing & the 1870's vintage steam powered train which goes through there. some of the other areas need restoration but this town is filled with architectural gems just waiting to be restored plus most of the city was built before cars become dominate so it is a surprisingly walkable town. Much more so then most other west coast American cities. The State Capital building and Capital Park also get two thumbs up.

Sounds like a great pad Oerdin.

Let's just hope your not moving in with a couple of serial killers (just joking man).

I would be asking myself why did a wooden house survive 100 years if it is any good? why didn't ants eat it already?

I didn't notice any termite damage. I'm not buying the place I'm just renting part of it. Still, it looks nice and most of the decks are redwood which as a type of acid in the wood so the bugs really don't like it. I'm not sure if the rest of the house is red wood but it wouldn't surprise me as around 1900 red wood was a big export from California.

I can remember as a kid going to an old gold rush era lumber mill as my family drove through the gold country. All of the mills had pills of saw dust. No big deal right? Wrong, the mills had been closed for 100 years but the saw dust still hadn't decomposed because the natural acids in the redwood kept the criters away. Redwood lasts for ever.

Yeah, all them places in Old Sac are made of wood and they are still there? Old Sac is great to hang around... Pretty much the whole of K Street Mall, it hasn't gotten a lot nicer since there since I moved out...

There is plenty to do in Sac, that is what is great. Have you gone to Sudwerks? Pretty good beer and food...

They closed Sudwerks! Now you have to go to Davis if you want their beers but not to worry there's still a good four or five brewpubs including one about a block from my house in midtown.
