  • Some positive news from the gutter...

I don't know this girl but she goes to one of my neighbourhood high schools (the other one being Fels). Just goes to show that people in hard positions can still succeed.

Being a mother and being a high school student are both full-time jobs. But Latoya Clay, a 17-year-old at Frankford High School, manages to do them both simultaneously. And she hasn't allowed her complicated life to keep her from excelling at school.

Latoya's mother supplied the motivation for her to succeed.

"My mom had to go through a lot to keep us happy. She gave up a lot of stuff."

Latoya's older sister set the standard for what she wants to accomplish, and Latoya is trying to do the same for her younger siblings. Even though she has a child of her own, she always pitches in when her mom needs help.

Despite all these responsibilities, Latoya was the captain of her school's basketball team, is a member of the National Honor Society and is one of the Senior 12 - a group of the top 12 female students at Frankford.

Next year, she will attend Clark-Atlanta University, with the help of several academic scholarships. Her daughter will live with her father in an apartment near campus. "For priorities, my daughter is first, then school, then the rest of my family. I go to school to help prepare for my daughter's future."

Latoya hopes to become a high school math teacher. She'll be a good one - she has a 103 average in Advanced Placement Calculus.

One reason she wants to be a high school teacher is that a Frankford counselor has been such a significant help to her these past four years. Counselor Janice Notter was "always there when I needed something, she was more of a friend."

Latoya will move to Atlanta in July to prepare for her freshman year. Until then, she's continuing her telemarketing job and looking forward to getting her diploma on June 17.

Lack of money or education does not mean you can't be a success.

I find it interesting that AS continues to laud the street culture he lives in, but blames all its problems on outsiders. In his mind, this girl shouldn't have had sex, and it's us evil liberals who's sex ed classes made her want to have sex. In my mind, it's obvious she didn't pay attention in sex ed, cuz then she woulda used a condemn, and we wouldn't be hearing about how strong she is.

No, but it definately stacks the odds against you.

AS, every city in the US is not a gutter. Chicago ain't a gutter. Milwaukee ain't a gutter. Seattle and Portland aren't gutters.

Obviously she didn't or she wouldn't have gotten pregnant. It doesn't take a genius to use a condom.

NYC is not a gutter. Parts of it may be, arts of it are as far form a gutter as you will ever get. I've been thrice to Philly, and besides the time I went to Upenn, most of what I saw was fine, if boring.

The sad things is that this girl's story is exceptional:

                  1. She is clearly extremely smart, well above average, at least in Math. She would succeed anywhere.

                  2. She had the help of very dedicated people who knew how to and when to give help. Scuh people are rare.

Now why wouldnt a girl who is clearly very intelligent not pay attention in the easy Health classes where sex ed is taught?

I dunno, why don't you ask her? Course, it's always possible that Philly and Pennsylvania gutted their sex-ed programs. I know Jax teaches kids that condoms don't work and can't stop HIV (wrong on both counts).

BTW, just cuz you're awesome in Math, doesn't mean yuo're good elsewhere. I got a 34 in my math skills on the ACT (out of a possible 35) but only got a 22 in my English. These days, my English is much better, while I have barely any math skills at all. (must be all those drugs I did in college).

BUt being very good at one things is a form of intelliegence. She is also a member of the National Honor society. That means she is no slouch in her other subjects, and she i also an athlete on top of that. Overall the picture of an incredably capable human being.

                            Chegitz:

nah philly has a full sex ed curriculum and plus the district gives out condems for free... the only thing is many teachers don't want to teach sex ed... my health teacher this year is the wife of a (baptist i believe) preacher and she is only willing to say the negatives of birth control devices... she leaves the Peer Counselors (who are students who teach sex ed to younger grades) to do the real sex education...

so basically, many teachers are opposed to sex ed but the district mandates it and also gives out free condoms...

                            thankjs

It just goes to show that hardship can be used as an excuse (AS) or it can be something to be over come, like this girl has.
