Are we EVER going to eliminitate the electorial college?
Actually the electoral college gives better representation to the states.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
Our forefathers are a lot smarter than you give them credit for. Without the Electoral college the United States would be ran by the East and West coasts. What representation would the heartland of America have, absolutely none.

better representation of the various states is not a good thing. this is why we have 2 houses in congress so there would be balance. here, they just slapped together a bad system.
if it was by simple majority i think the will of the people would be better represented.
california republic uber alles (and if that fails i can always flee to canada)

Let's just say that I give you this thread on my allowance. Consider this a Spiffor thread
On Topic :
Indeed, I don't see the use of an electoral college in a modern country when all the election results can be wired to Washington immediately after being calculated (very different from the early US, when communications between the far outreaches of the country and the capitol took weeks).
The electoral college was a technical solution to a problem, which is obsolete since the telegraph is around.
It doesn't disappear because it polarizes the political battle in two parties, by making sure smaller parties won't win (and hence won't grow). And the two parties in power both profit from this situation like bandits, and won't intend to change the law.

defiant, if the country was truly fair the states that supported the country the most, california, texas, and new york would all have more say than religious run backwoods like idaho and kentucky.
arent republicans into the whole "1 dollar one vote" type of thing?

The Senate is here to represent the interest of geographic locations. Wisconsin has two Senators, just like Hawaii and just like California.
Except that the electoral college makes your voice much more worth than the one of a New Yorker, and that you want to keep this priviledge, I don't see any reason to advocate keeping it...

Well, it's also symbolic... the STATES pick the President, so remember that Mr. Prez . If you considered each state to be a semi-country (as was originally considered when the US was created) then it makes perfect sense.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In my opinion the detriment to the United States are states like, New York, California, Texas and Florida.
I believe the true value of America is in the heartland, hence the term.
I would be careful if I were you throwing around who is backwards, isn't your state #1 per capita for suicides?
Can't be too much clear thinking people there.
BTW, its "one fair dollar to one fair vote".

Right, "real" Americans are in the Midwest, the ones on the coast (which constitute the bulk of the American population) are somehow lesser...
Without it Spiffor, Wisconsin has virtually no say and the populas states already have greater advantage in the House, again as it should be, but the electoral if for electing presidents, I am not talking about creating laws now.
