  • I need a new firewall.... suggestions? Also question for anyone who has Zone Alarm

Using zone alarm, getting sick of it....

Preferably something free, but if its great I'll pay, any recomendations?

Zone alarm always causes slow downs with online games for me-sick of it.

Edit: Any chance anyone here found a solution to that?

I disagree. ZoneAlarm catches more intrustions (like, 4 times more at least) than PFW ever did.

Mind you I was using V2 of PFW (Coulnd't get 3 to work).

Half the games I play online, it slows down when I play online. If I disable it, the game play instantly speeds up-but I cant leave my comp on with no fire wall....

Thanks Vesayen. I was planning on playing a few online games when my faster system is built - but you've just raised this issue, so here's my thinking;-

              1) I intend to have a bootable HD that's games only. Minimal if any firewall, together with some scrubbing and virus checker utils plus my games.

              2) A second HD, which has my documents, WP and other non-games items.

So depending on what I'm doing I've essentially got 2 separate systems.

              Any thoughts/comments on that solution?

Apart from the obvious "but it needs 2 hard disks".

I'm using AtGuard 3.22, the last version before it was bought by norton and became Norton Firewall

I haven't had any trouble with Zone Alarm playing games like Neverwinter Nights. That's really the only online game I play.

You need Linux dual boot. And you should dissable file sharing in windoze.

When I tried to use Zonealarm it crashed half the programs on my computer, including the shut-down procedure. Couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

ZoneAlarm worked fine until I noticed that it corrupts data for certain programs, such as dc++. I switched to Sygate Personal Firewall, which I haven't yet gotten any problems with.
