I'll willing to bet he likes our Elgin Marbles.

Saw those at the British Museum during my trip. Glad somebody is bothering to keep the antiquities safe, clean and in good shape. Just look at the Parthenon...

actually the parthenon marbles have been partially destroyed in the british museum as said to their credit by british archeologists. they "scratched" them and bleeched them and took away their natural brown coloration. not to mention the damage from being removing from the parthenon.

Yes, the cleaning in the 1930s was quite unfortunate. Terrible, stupid mistake.

But, had Elgin not acted as he did, they likely would not even be around anymore, or would have significantly worse damage.

not really considering the part of the parthenon marbles that he did leave inplace are faring much better than the ones in the british museum.

Given that the Acropolis was twice beseiged during thier war of independence, that's a very likely scenario.

                              Precisely.

Although, the British Museum did little to help its cause of retaining the marbles when they abruptly cancelled ther conference to discuss them for extremely petty and suspect reasons.

I suspect they will eventually be returned, albeit some time in the future.
