Yeah, it is clear... he was a CABINET MINISTER. Accepting the role doesn't mean a damned thing unless you are confirmed by the Senate (for a vacancy). IIRC, the State of the Union was about this... though I may be off a bit.
It says in the book-jacket "the man who only minutes before had been confirmed as the new Vice-President"

      ACK!
I never read any of the Clancy "movie" books.

If that's true, then Clancy ****ed up.

Because you can't have a damn State of the Union address without the Vice-President! And if it wasn't the State of the Union, then the Supreme Court should have been no where near there.

Clancy ****ed up because that's not the way the government works... not because I'm always right (even though that's true as well ).

I'm halfway through Bill Bryson's new book A Short History of Nearly Everything.

This is a great book for layman about science. Bryson looks at things like how do we know how much the earth weighs, or how old it is, evolution and genetics.

What's equally interesting are the stories Bryson tells about the famous and not-so-famous scientists.

The book is extremely well-written and covers so many scientific disciplines that I think even a scientist would find it interesting.

I'm reading somethingoranother by Ray Bradbury. I usually can't remember what I've just read after reading one of his books/stories, except that I liked it (whatever it was). Only books/stories I remember of his (and I've read quite a few) are Farenheit 451 and The Very Gentle Murders.

I'm also reading a book on planning algorithms. Huzzah!

While not for the feint of heart or weak of english, it's an interesting read. It covers a lot of ground, not all of which is necessary to support the thesis IMO, but much of which is still interesting.

A better book all in all is Archer Jones' "The Western Art of War", which shows every innovation in western warfare from the Greeks to the Modern era via the descriptions of battles and campaigns. This is chock full of military history that you should know but don't. An invaluable tool for someone who wonders what the armies of X period were like. Read this book and you will know that, as well as why, and what came before and after.
