  • Recommend me a good black and white film:

Old or new, doesnt matter as long as its good. But old would be better.

I dont care what kind of genre it is. But I'm guessing there wont be too much really good black and white action film, cause that kind of movies usually rely heavily on visuals. But you can try to prove me wrong. That would be actually be really nice.

    Buster Keaton's "The General."

Or (IIRC) Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai."

IIRC the movie that "City of Angels" remade was in black and white, but I can't quite remember its name. Wings of an Angel? Something like that...

      Dr Strangelove ('64)

I wouldn't rule out a chance to preserve a nucleus of human specimen.

"Duck Soup" or "A day at the Races", in fact ANYTHING by the Marx brothers.

I think, as a group, they have yet to be bettered for US comedy.

"The African Queen". Always preferred Bogey in this to "Casablanca".

Zero: Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a german film (not that it really mattered, since it was silent). Been awhile since I've seen it, but "Wings of an Angel" or "On the Wings of an Angel" seem close.

"All Quiet on the Western Front" if you like war movies. Bit long for today's audience though.

some you wont have to recommend. heres a list on top of my head (I already watched these)

All quiet on the wester front
                    Citizen Kane
Seven Samurai (and other samurai films by kurosawa)
                    King Kong
                    Frankenstein
                    Dracula
                    Seventh Seal
All of kubrick (including color anyway)
                    Pi
                    Schindler's list

                    ...etc

There's just something about seeing things in black and white. Sometimes film would suck if they were in color. I dunno it looks nicer on rare ocassion.

I'm a tad soft for the 1930 version of "All quiet on the western front". Some parts of it hasn't aged that well though. It's a long time since 1930 in the world of films but there's a couple of very good scenes. If you'd like to move forwards a couple of years and see that it wasn't so funny on the french side of the front either, Kubricks "Paths to Glory" is a very good film.
