  • Exxon shareholders nix green proposals(The Onion), a must read, VERY eye-opening!

New funny article on the onion-read it all, its not long and I think it is eye-opening to say the least:

DALLAS, Texas -- Exxon Mobil Corp. shareholders this week voted down proposals concerning global warming and renewable energy, as the head of the global energy giant said profits take precedence over social causes.

"We won't jump on the bandwagon just because others may have a different view," Chief Executive and Chairman Lee Raymond said. "We don't invest to make social statements at the expense of shareholder return."

The proposals failed to sway many shareholders, who rejected the renewable energy measure with 79 percent opposed, compared with 80 percent opposed a year ago. A new proposal calling for a report on climate change was voted down with 78 percent opposed.

Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. and other groups that advise mutual fund and pension managers, recommended investors support these proposals.

Advocates say these issues have become so controversial they threaten Exxon Mobil's bottom line. One group, Campaign ExxonMobil, claimed a "strong showing" in the face of marketing efforts by the company to play down the issue.

Another measure calling on the oil giant to state it was against discrimination based on sexual orientation, was voted down with 73 percent opposed, down from 76 percent a year ago.

The company has stated it has a policy that prohibits any form of discrimination or harassment at any of its work places around the world.

Environmental groups have accused Exxon of blocking policies and programs that would curb global warming.

Raymond said the company was committed to developing technologies that address the long-term risks of climate change while Exxon Mobil was working to reduce harmful emissions.

Raymond told the meeting that he expects natural gas to increase its share of the global energy market over the next several years. Much of the company's natural gas growth opportunities come from its projects in Qatar, he said.

"We are somewhere in the process of becoming a significant natural gas importer in this country," Raymond said, adding there would have to be major improvements made in the liquid natural gas import capabilities of the United States.

He also said the company will be paying closer attention to Iraq as it starts significant exports of crude oil to world markets.

Raymond played down the role of solar and wind power as a source in the global energy market, saying that the two sources will not likely exceed a 1 percent share of the world's energy needs by 2020.

"We believe oil and gas, which represents about 60 percent of energy supplies today, will remain the dominant energy source," Raymond said.

The eye opening surprise? The above is entirley true, and found on CNN-dont believe me?

Kinda sad, isnt it? Says volumes about one of our(U.S.)'s top companies.......

Sad that the above is true......

Am I supposed to be surprised? This is like being shocked at the fact that Wolves will pray on sheep, and the fact that vultures eat carcasses. It's like being shocked that people brush teeth with toothbrushes, or use their legs to walk. These are just things, social constructs, in this case, fullfulling their purpose, acting according to what they were meant to do.. And that purpose is profit, not any social, or enviromental concern.

With 79% of share holders opposed it would have been suicidal for management to sign on to the plan. Besides what evactly are they supposed to do about Solar power? They are an oil company after all.

Shell is the biggest developer of solar power technology and applications in the world. Smart oil companies realize that they're energy and commodity companies.

Exactly. Here in Canada, Bell used to be just a phone company. Now they have a stake in satellite television and broadcasting, as well as the Internet. They've expanded their focus to include communications in general, not just telephones. If energy companies hope to survive in the future, they'll need to broaden their horizons beyond just fossil fuels. The writing's on the wall for that particular energy source.

So, the shareholders voted down more proposals from whackos who own 22 shares just for the purpose of making said proposals? Why is this surprising to anybody who has ever filled out a Proxy card?

Would be funny, except it's not in the Onion anywhere.

Clearly not surprising at all. We're talking about Exxon here, the one company that skims on costs by using single-hulled oil tankers. Ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you, the Exxon Valdez.

                  Nice troll.

                  0.000001 at least.

Next time, try to pick something less than 14 years old, and if you want to blame single hulled tankers, at least pick an incident where that was a key factor. Exxon Valdez grounded on Bligh reef hard enough and deep enough to rupture a double hulled vessel.

BTW, in the 25 years preceding the Exxon Valdez spill, it was only 39th in magnitude worldwide.

Esso/Exxon's always been full of *******s from what I've seen. Lee Raymond is obnoxious and rude to anyone and everyone, I pity the people who have to work under him.

                        Dave O'Reilly...now there's a great man.
He spends more times talking to employees about their families than about work at dinners.

Anyone who talks about work at employee dinners or group dinners outside of regular working hours should be shot. I used to hear those types all the time in my SV days.

Could you conclusively show that a double hull would not have made a difference?

In terms of what? Amount of oil spilled? Damage to the environment? Cost of cleanup?

Well, it was first in media hysteria, that's for sure.
