In Hong Kong, the government plans to raise the spitting fine to about US$200, not that it really means anything. When they tried to enforce the rules last year, the public health officials were attacked when they tried to give out tickets.
The government is also planning on new rules that would let them evict people from public housing if they don't keep their apartments clean.

Some got attacked. Of course, that's a completely idiotic reaction, since doing so changes a minor fine into jail time.
BTW, I think it's just HKD1,200, a shade less than USD150.

Yeah, but the stupid thing is instead of continuing to enforce the littering laws, the civil servants ran back to their safe offices. They should have gone out in stronger force with police protection.
Raising the fine won't do anything if they don't enforce the rules.
I wish they would. It would make Hong Kong a better place. Or at least the littering rules. Spitting isn't that common. I saw more of it in Tokyo in four days than I see in Hong Kong in a year.

They better enforce the rules. Good thing is the overall atmosphere is more conducive to public hygiene nowadays than it ever has been for many years.

I'd like them to get rid of the butcher stores that spill out on the streets. When I was living in Sai Ying Pun, I used to have to walk past a butcher shop that would always seem to have a cow's skull in a garbage basket on the sidewalk. Not the best way to start the day.
I know people have always bought meat this way, but it is time to move forward.

I don't think it's a problem with selling fresh meat, but with how the meat is sold. Right now, many of the stores are unhygienic, and that's bad. The saving grace of the whole thing is the meat gets cooked thoroughly most of the time during preparation of the dishes.
In the long run, the rules should be changed that they could only have the meat inside the store, which should be kept clean.
