  • Taxing in the US

How does it work? There are two types of taxes, federal and state taxes, right? If you're not citizen and you pay federal taxes, are you supposed to pay state taxes too?

I don't know the laws and taxing too much? So, you have to pay both state and federal taxes even if you're not citizen, just working there? Ok...

I can't imagine a Country taxing foreigners less than nationals...

Federal, state, and local income taxes. Property (real estate) taxes and sales & use taxes. Miscellaneous taxes on cable TV, phone, and cell phone. Local restaurant taxes in some cities. Sin taxes on cigarettes and booze. Federal and state highway use gasoline taxes.

Depending on where you are, it is some mix of those and others which I'm forgetting. If you don't own any real estate, you only have to worry about your federal and state income tax returns. Local income taxes are normally collected by the state and are rolled into your state income tax return.

So, you have to pay both state and federal taxes even if you're not citizen, just working there? Ok...

The scale is different for non-resident aliens (i.e., if you don't have your green card). You might even pay more under certain circumstances. This is true even though you don't get the benefit of certain services, like some social security benefits, IIRC.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Different items get taxed by different methods by different levels of government.

For example, property taxes are assessed at the city or county level, but not at the state or federal level. Sales can be city, county, or state, but not at the federal level... unless you're talking about certain products like gasoline. Some states only assess sales taxes on certain items (non-food purchases), others assess sales taxes as a percentage of gross revenue, regardless of product.

Income taxes are usually assessed at the state and federal levels, though some cities and counties might have a small income tax though. Tennessee doesn't have a personal income tax though it does have a personal tax on investments and a corporate income tax (dumb, imo).

Payroll taxes are state and federal. Car taxes are state and local.

It really just bleedin' depends upon where you live.

If those are sins then maybe taxing them is a sin too

The thing about state taxes is that they vary from different state. Some states go by income taxes, others go by sales tax.

For example, here in Texas there is no state income tax. This attracts many professional atheletes here because their income doesn't get taken as much (that and Houston is very minority friendly).

Spiffor: Yep. They're called "sin taxes" by everyone. Don't know if they're actually referred by that in the actual laws, though.

Sin taxes sounds cool. We call them.. I can't translate it but pretty much the same, damage taxes or something like that. Then again if I listed all the taxes we had here, Apolyton server would shut down and die.
