I watched the first episode last season. After seeing the horrible, cruel things Simon said to people--things that he has no right to say--I refused to watch anymore. It's one thing to have a talent competition, it's quite another to make a public spectacle out of humiliating people who are following their aspirations.

That is the BEST PART! And he has every right to say them. He's a music critic and these people want to be signed to HIS label (the winner gets their album produced by Simon Cowell's label).

The first few shows are the best, when the worst, who think they are the best, get chewed out.

Simon is my favorite judge, by far. He tells it like it is .

Simon is just that--a critic. He hasn't any talent himself that I can discern, except for putting people down.

He has every right to be critical, but the cruel measures he goes to are not only unneccessary, they're disgusting. He has also, as Paula Abdul pointed out, said things to people that are blatantly not true. To tell someone they have no hope ever of being a good singer is not true. He takes delight in squashing people whose only crime is wanting to sing, and I think it's immoral. He can be honest without being mean.

Paula is annoying. She should be thrown out from being a judge.

And that's the thing, he can't be honest without being mean, because most of those people DESERVE what Simon says. There people have seem AI 1, they know what he's like. So they have no excuse. If you suck, you get told you suck. He is the best part of the show, and a breath of fresh air. The mean comments make that show and keep millions of us watching. He is the man!

You're wrong, Imran. You can be very honest without being mean. Someone getting up and doing a bad job does not make them deserve to be treated with cruelty--how can you say that?

Having a great deal of experience with real vocal competitions, I can tell you that Simon's behavior is appalling. First and foremost, his criticism should be constructive. That is honest and fair.

"You know, your performance wasn't very good, but here's why: you need to work on your pitch, as you went flat a lot."

That is infinitely superior to:

"You are terrible and will never be any good."

I think you are wrong Boris. Some people suck SOOO bad, that you need to tell them, 'You are terrible and you never, ever, ever will be any good'. They deserve to be treated that bad if they sucked that bad. Plain and simple. Constructive criticism isn't worth a damn if the person sucks so insanely badly.

His behavior may be appaulling to you, but it was refreshing to us. And we loved Simon. You could see it by the huge applauses given to him at the last few shows whenever he was annouced. We love the guy because he doesn't hold back and says what he wants to say. It's about time someone didn't hold back and 'think about the feelings'. Screw their feelings, they knew what they were getting into.

Btw: one of the more popular AI shows what 'The Best of the Worst'. People love seeing how bad some people are. And then last night they had some of those people do a song/parody thing. It was wonderful .
