    Elvis Costello defends outspoken artists

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) --British singer-songwriter Elvis Costello Tuesday defended musicians who speak their minds in these "fairly dangerous times" and warned Americans to guard against "any attempts by people who swindle their way into office."

Addressing a music industry dinner in Beverly Hills, California, Costello also criticized the British political system, which he described as "privileged people handing wigs to one another making the laws of the land."

The 48-year-old musician, famed for such songs as "Oliver's Army" and "Everyday I Write the Book," was being honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, a music licensing group that also campaigns for artists' rights.

Costello drew loud cheers from the black-tie audience, which included songwriters Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Burt Bacharach, Solomon Burke and Nelly.

His comments came amid concerns that singers and actors who spoke out against the U.S.-led war in Iraq were being blacklisted.

When the lead singer of popular country trio the Dixie Chicks criticized President Bush, many U.S. radio stations all but stopped playing the group's songs.

"We all live in fairly dangerous times in terms of freedom of speech and freedom of expression," Costello said.

"A lot of the songwriters that I've admired and learned from ... are people who spoke in matters of conscience as well as matters of the heart. I think that it's essential that we defend that right."

After noting that he had written more than 300 songs -- "and none of them have been successful" -- Costello performed versions of "Almost Blue" and "Alison" as well as a brand new piano ballad called "When It Sings."

Burke, seated in a wheelchair for most of the evening, earlier sang the Costello-written tune "The Judgment," which appeared on the soul legend's recent Grammy-winning album "Don't Give Up On Me."

Here ya go. You jingo's have a lot of work to do. If you own any Elvis Costello CD's, you should burn them. Otherwise, you are an America hating leftist! I'm also starting a petition to exile Costello to Cuba where he should fit in nicely!
To us, it is the BEAST.

What exactly does Oliver's Army refer to? Love the song but I've never understood it.

It always comes back to the election... what in the hell are they going to be saying after 2004?

I'm a dumb liberal, I have nothing to throw at Bush except that it was a very close election and I'm still bitter he won on account of a court ruling! Damn these three seperate but equal branches of the government!

It's possible he's referring to Blair (since Costello is British) and his conservative transformation.

You can't do that. I support the Republican party. Ergo I am a patriot.

Right now I'm drinking a nice French Bordeaux. Last weekend, I ate at a good French restaurant. I'm boycotting Texas wine (which is no real loss really) to protest King George W.

Hey Veda, have you read the actual court decision? That is the most unconvincing, insincere opinion ever written. And conservatives have the unmitigated gaul to say Scalia and Co. interpret the law. Those guys make the so-called activism of the Warren court look list strict cinstruction. Conservatives don't really want judges who interpret the law - they want activists.

Had the Warren court issued the same decision (but in Gore's favor) conservatives would still be screaming bloody murder and threatening to take to the streets with their guns that will have to be ripped from "their cold dead hands". (Makes me wistful for Janet Reno - but with her, just replace the word 'cold' with 'crispy').
