Wouldn;t 10 be more like 1984 than farenheit 451? Can you really compare book burnings to Double speak?

book burning was a mere facet of the government control... but yes, 1984 would be another good example"I bet Ikarus eats his own spunk..."

4. The government should be able to enforce the law, and protect the people, and take reasonable measures the improve the economy, but there should be no excessive interference in people's lives."I'm moving to the Left" - Lancer

Ideally I'm with the anarchists here. Realistically, I'm voting 6.Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

I agree with Azazel... this poll is unfair. There are aspects that the state should control, and others it should not.
Social Behavior Issues: (religion, art, substance usage, sexual behavior, political beliefs, literature, and press) The government's only involvement in these aspects of life should be to maintain the freedom of its citizens to choose how they want to live their lives.
Public Safety Issues: (police, fire, health-care, military) The government's primary concern is to protect its citizens. Thus, these aspects should be in government control.
Economic Issues: I believe in strongly in the Capitalist system. The government should keeps its nose out of business, and business should be out of government. I have very unorthodox theories on how the government should bring in revenue. Income should be taxed less... people shouldn't be penalized for what they produce... I'd like to see government funded more like a non-profit corporation, bringing in revenue for usage and consumption of energy and infrastructural systems. Basically, my economic system would consist of an almost laisze-faire (spelling?) consumer goods market... a self-sufficient, non-profit government controlled energy and transportation sector... and a tax-funded public safety sector. I haven't yet thought up specifics, so please don't ask for any.
Regardless of involvement... government should be democratic and the number of parties not restricted. To us, it is the BEAST.

I voted a 7 but could go up to an 8 or 9 in times of crises.
(Crises = defending aganist Communist threat, terrorism, times of war, and so on.)
OT question for Azazel - Is that a picture of yourself in your avatar???
You look so wise and all-knowing! As if you know something that none of us do.......
