A 10 year-old can't reason about sex the same way a 16 year-old can.

If the person has reached the age the law has decided the mental capacity to give consent kicks in at, then the person they screw is not committing a crime. The kid might be violating his parents' wishes by doing it, but that shouldn't have to be the concern of the kid's sexual partner. See above for movie example.

Reason contract analogy is flawed is that 18 is age where reason for money matters kicks in, as far as the law is concerned. Contracts are part of that, as is necessity for person to feed and clothe themselves.

There is no such obvious connection to sexual decision-making.

i.e. if the kid's parents don't want him having sex, ground him. Statutory rape is supposed to apply where consent cannot be given due to inability of the victim to give consent. Has nothing to do with parents' wishes.

Same reason a parent can't sell his child's services in pornographic films or use them for their own sexual gratification.

Whatever level it is, it will be arbitrary. Maybe 18 makes sense for some people. i mean, the child still is a ward of his parents so his maturity in terms of decisions, etc. can be expected to be less than when he is self-sufficient.

Yeah...well...what is the magic difference between a 16 yearold and a 14 year old versus an 18 and a 16 year old. Why not just make it clean. 18 to drink, ****, fight and die.

Statutory rape at 17 is just a way for parents to control their kids, not a protection for said kid. They already have legal guardianship over them, which means they can tell them where to go, who to see etc. Just because your kid doesn't listen to you is no excuse for a ****ty law like that.

I had an affair like the one you describe when I was 17 years old. It didn't destroy me per se, but it did let me carry my abuse baggage that much further into my adult life. I went from being a very sexually active teenager who never had a date with anyone who went to his school (though I did sleep with several girls from the neighborhood, or girls I ran into at parties) to a teenager who was living with his 24 year old girlfriend while attending high school. I skipped the whole high school and early college dating scene because I was already way too involved with an older woman, and trying to fit into her scene. Obviously we were both emotionally messed up at the time, but this was a diversion from dealing with my problems that I didn't need, but was not mature enough to avoid on my own accord.
