  • Suggestions on starting a blog?

I'm going to start a blog and am interested in knowing what others here have used.

I've read a lot of blogspot blogs but don't like the look of many of those, especially how they deal with archives. Are there any good alternatives?

I might just go with setting up a blog on my own web site. Are there any good, free, open-source php/MySQL-based engines? I have been so happy with phpBB on several forums that I've set up, so I'm positively predisposed towards this setup.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

LiveJournal is really good, but it's geared towards journal-type blogs more. You can basically customize every little thing yourself if you get a paid account, and the thing is open-source if you wanna play with that.

Personally I wrote my own PHP/MySQL blogging tool in a couple days a couple years ago. It did everything from user management, to posting, to editing, to searching (even highlighting the keywords a la google), and viewing archives in predefined timesegments or by selecting a start & end date...

            It's very easy stuff.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Oh okay, thanks for the info.

              I really like phpBB.

I think you can run a Postgres backend on it as well.

Hey, that would let us run a heavier load and therefore show images inline! :

Hey, Salam Pax and his buddy G. are about ready to sell out to those evil American Zionist Imperialists. Didn't you read the blog?

I'm trying B2. It looks really simple and was a snap to install.

                        here's a suggestion: don't do it.

Really, why would you want to do it? I am so lucky this trend totally passed me by.

                          1. Make it interesting
                          2. Make it understandable (ie. not dealing with something esoteric only two people and a dog are interested in)
                          3. Have something new to say
                          4. Remember to make a regular contribution
                          5. Call it something else than a blog (I hate that word.)
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency
"That’s the future of the Democratic Party: providing Republicans with a number of cute (but not that bright) comfort women." - Adam Yoshida, Canada's gift to the world

I'm afraid it's not going to be understandable or interesting. Economics, business/finance, politics. You know, what I normally post about on Poly.

And it's going to be called a blog. I didn't make the word up, so don't blame me!

I've got to figure up a name... Any bright ideas in this regard? Blee bloo blar blog has already been taken.
