  • Can anybody help me with a Linux problem?

    I have just installed Linux for the first time ever. I have installed Mandrake 9.1. My problem is that i can not get any sound. I get only static in my speakers. My setup is this: ASUS A7VX333 motherboard with onboard sound, which I have disabled in my BIOS as I have a Creative SB Live! soundcard, which runs perfectly under Windows XP.

    In Linux, I am using the default driver for my soundcard, but as I said. No sound. When Linux tries to play sound, I have a hissing noise in my speakers, otherwise static. My speakers are normal 5.1 channel speakers, but I have found nowhere in Mandrake 9.1 that lets my tell Linux that my speakers are 5.1. Can anybody help me?

    The SBLive drivers included in the kernel the last time I compiled didn't work for me. I had to download another version of that driver and use that. If you are feeling adventurous then go to http://www.euronet.nl/~mailme/ and download and compile some of the other drivers and try them out.

      I'm using the ALSA emu10k1 driver for Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1 Model SB0100 *. Works great, especially in the 2.5.69 kernel which has fixed a recent problem with MIDI synthesis I had. IIRC Asher has been in a pretty similar situation to yours, so he might also be able to help.. since I can't remember for my life how he fixed his system.

        I had a problem with the SB Audigy, and I just went to Creative's site and installed their open-source drivers like they instructed. Then it worked, mostly.

        ARTS still has problems with it.

          the speakers shouldn't be that much of an issue. mandrake's based on the redhat core, which means that you have your basic arTs setup for your sound card.

          ALSA might solve your woes, as might http://opensource.creative.com/ ...
          since i use a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz which uses a Cirrus Logic chip, i don't know the particulars of how to remedy this. sorry ^^;
