      Stories like this go the distance in putting my own bellyaching about aches and pains in perspective. Namely, my own suffering pales in comparison to what this man did, and what he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

            The guy had his own private hell and overcame it. Likely thirst drove him to desperation. He didn't curl up and die though.

                  I go hiking alone all the time. I know I shouldn't, but I can't get anyone to go with me . But I would never do anything dangerous like that alone. But I do face the prospect of twisting or breaking an ankle, or possibly cracking my head open. That's just the risk I take. I will have to just find a way down the mountain. I do bring my dog with me, but she's useless. I doubt she would know how to find help
