basically i just want to be able to use the mail() function in PHP, but i guess it would be cool to have a fully functional pop3.

Can't you configure PHP to use an external mail server?
I believe that's what I did a couple years ago...

well i dont have one of those lying around anyway, and im not sure how legal it is to bounce email off another

i checked #PHP on all the irc servers i idle on, and i got one called "MDeamon". lesse how it works.

If so what Urban said is right. Not only that, sendmail should be ready to run by default on Linux. Just plug in the mail function and run it!
You'll have to enable it if you're running FreeBSD.

Yes sendmail has a history of bugs but most people still use it.
