Yes, so tasteless that I have edited the title.
Since the topic may have some interest without that title, I'll leave the thread open, FOR NOW>

I have two words to say to this: So what?
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

well... the people who spent time (probably a lot of time) getting this experiment ready were probably pleased to be able to get some data back.

Unless the crash and all the unattended time that has passed invalidated whatever they were testing. But they probably still have some value.

                    Columbia survivors found!
                    [nitpick mode]

The C elegans worms have a life cycle of seven to 10 days, meaning that the ones found this week were likely to be four or five generations removed from the original space travellers.
So, no, they weren't. Their descendants were.

I apologise for the bad taste of the original title.

Seriously though, it is interesting that something living could and did survive the crash. Particularly a relatively complex animal that was able to reproduce itself and thrive after going through those extreme conditions. And they might get something back from their experiment.

They probably have little value as most experiments in space are observational in nature. Data recorded on the shuttle, if recovered, could actually make the experiment a success.

You fools, you fools! Has no one here ever watch a movie made in the 50's?? Those worms have been exposed to cosmic forces beyond our miniscule ability to understand. They will soon grow to gargantuan size and begin devouring American cities! Run!! Run before it's too late!!!
